HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to recognize the 40th anniversary of the
4Glen Ellyn Area Alumnae Chapter (GEAAC) of Delta Sigma Theta
5Sorority, Inc. on February 18, 2017; and
 
6    WHEREAS, GEAAC is a group of college educated women who
7hold various careers, and who work together as an organization
8to enrich the lives of others; they have awarded hundreds of
9college scholarships to deserving young men and women seeking
10to further their education; they have provided countless hours
11of community service, using their collective talents and
12resources to provide free programs, assistance, and services
13throughout the western suburbs of Chicago; and
 
14    WHEREAS, GEAAC was conceived over brown bag lunches at
15Irving School in Maywood in 1976; it was chartered in January
16of 1977 by 24 women and now has over 250 members; it serves the
17western suburbs of Chicago, including towns in Cook, DuPage,
18Kane, Kendall, Will, and DeKalb counties; and
 
19    WHEREAS, During the early years, some of GEAAC's public
20service projects included, food baskets for families in need at
21Thanksgiving and Christmas, weekly story hour at Loyola's
22Children's Hospital, serving and assisting in shelters, Toy

1Disco, assistance at the Baptist Nursing Home, book drives,
2compiling and submitting lists of African-American books to
3public schools, and contributions to the DuPage County NAACP;
4and
 
5    WHEREAS, The first major fundraiser for GEAAC was a talent
6competition in 1979 known as Miss Jabberwock; over the years
7programs, outreach, and community partnerships have been
8expanded to help meet the needs of the community, including
9hosting the Mental Health Resource Fair and community
10discussions at Riveredge Hospital; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was founded on
12January 13, 1913 as a non-profit organization whose purpose is
13to provide assistance and support through established programs
14in local communities throughout the world; a sisterhood of more
15than 300,000 predominately Black college-educated women; it
16currently has over 1,000 chapters located in the United States,
17England, Japan, Germany, the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, the
18Bahamas, and the Republic of Korea; therefore, be it
 
19    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
20HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
21recognize the 40th anniversary of the Glen Ellyn Area Alumnae
22Chapter (GEAAC) of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and we
23wish them many more successful years; and be it further
