HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate Milton L. McDaniel Sr. on
4his induction into the Illinois Labor History Society Union
5Hall of Honor; and
 
6    WHEREAS, On August 4, 1967, Milton McDaniel Sr. was hired
7as the first African American locomotive fireman north of the
8Ohio River on the Illinois Central Railroad; and
 
9    WHEREAS, In November of 2017, Milton McDaniel Sr. will be a
1050-year member of the SMART-Transportation Division and its
11predecessors, including the United Transportation Union; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Milton McDaniel Sr. and his wife, Corene, have
13worked to give back to their community of Carbondale; together
14they founded the African American Museum of Southern Illinois;
15and
 
16    WHEREAS, The induction of Milton McDaniel Sr. into the
17Union Hall of Honor on December 2, 2016 was in conjunction with
18the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Great
19Migration; and
 
20    WHEREAS, In recognition of this honor the Mayor of

1Carbondale declared December 2, 2016 to be "Milton L. McDaniel
2Sr. Day", proclaiming "in becoming the first African American
3locomotive engineer north of the Ohio River, he tore down
4racial barriers, dispelled stereotypes, and paved a previously
5untraveled road for men and women from under-represented
6populations in the North"; therefore, be it
 
7    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
8HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
9congratulate Milton L. McDaniel Sr. for his nearly 50
10continuous years of union membership and recognize his
11dedication, bravery, and pioneering spirit that has paved the
12way for those that followed; and be it further
 
13    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
14presented to Milton McDaniel Sr. as an expression of our esteem
15and respect.
