SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
20 ILCS 205/205-48 new

    Amends the Civil Administrative Code Department of Agriculture Law. Provides that the Department of Agriculture shall identify and track geographical areas in this State that are food deserts. Provides that the Department shall notify respective municipal governmental bodies identified as food deserts and provide an annual report to the General Assembly detailing the locations of food deserts within the State and an analysis of health impacts on populations in locations identified in this State as food deserts. Defines "food desert".

1    AN ACT concerning State government.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The Department of Agriculture Law of the Civil
5Administrative Code of Illinois is amended by adding Section
6205-48 as follows:
 
7    (20 ILCS 205/205-48 new)
8    Sec. 205-48. Tracking food deserts. The Department shall
9identify and track geographical areas in this State that are
10food deserts. The Department shall notify respective municipal
11governmental bodies identified as food deserts and provide an
12annual report to the General Assembly detailing the locations
13of food deserts within the State and an analysis of health
14impacts on populations in locations identified as food deserts.
15For the purposes of this Section, "food desert" means a
16location vapid of fresh fruit, vegetables, and other healthful
17whole foods, in part due to a lack of grocery stores, farmers'
18markets, or healthy food providers.
