WHEREAS, The Prust-Hosch Funeral Chapel was founded by Harry Prust
in 1901, and has been operated by members of the Prust-Hosch family
since, including Burton Prust, Donald Hosch, and Gregory Hosch; and

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives wish
to express their sincere condolences to the family and friends of
Philip F. Gustafson, who passed away on April 1, 2001; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Gustafson was a 48-year resident of Riverside,
Illinois; and
WHEREAS, While a student at the University of Michigan, Dr.
Gustafson volunteered for the United States Merchant Marine Service in
1944, where he utilized skills as an amateur radio operator in both the
European and Pacific theaters during World War II; after the war, he
returned to college and earned a degree in nuclear physics in 1949, and
his doctorate at the Illinois Institute of Technology; he enjoyed a
career as a nuclear scientist at Argonne National Laboratory; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Gustafson was a strong supporter of nuclear energy; he
authored more than 100 articles on the peaceful uses of nuclear energy
that have been published both nationally and internationally; he was
tireless in his efforts to monitor nuclear fallout from military
testing, and he has spent time in South America, Greenland, and the
United States monitoring atmospheric radiation; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Gustafson served with the Atomic Energy Commission in
Washington, D.C. from 1962 until 1968; in 1972, he was appointed to the
Illinois Atomic Energy Commission; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Gustafson in response to the incident at Three Mile
Island, Pennsylvania on March 28, 1979, undertook to study how the
State of Illinois could create a regulatory structure to protect the
State's residents; his study resulted in the creation of the Illinois
Department of Nuclear Safety, effective October 1, 1980; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Gustafson served as Director of the Illinois
Department of Nuclear Safety from 1981 until 1983; he retired in 1995
as the senior advisor to the director at Argonne National Laboratory;
and
WHEREAS, Dr. Gustafson served as a trustee on the Riverside Village
Board from 1991 until 1998; he was an active member of the Riverside

Lions Club; and he was an avid reader of geology and geography books,
Civil War history and other historical literature; and he was a world
traveler; and
WHEREAS, The passing of Philip F. Gustafson will be deeply felt by

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are
pleased to recognize milestone dates in the history of organizations of
the State of Illinois; and
WHEREAS, It has come to our attention that Joliet's Rialto Square
Theatre is celebrating it 75th anniversary on May 24, 2001; and
WHEREAS, George, Louis, Maurice, Jules, Harry, and Claude Rubens
opened the doors of their "dream theatre" on May 24, 1926; the brothers
were pioneers in the theatrical business and formed an alliance with
M.A. Felman to establish the largest theatre-operating organization in
the world; and
WHEREAS, Rubens' Rialto Square Theatre exhibits definitions of
Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Baroque, and Rococo styles of architecture to
create a "palace for the people" within its celestial city; it is
considered "a shrine to democracy where there are no priveleged
patrons"; and
WHEREAS, Some of the entertainment world's shining stars appeared
on the Rialto's stage, including Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, Lawrence Welk,
Ronald Regan, Duke Ellington, the Marx Brothers, Marcel Marceau,
Liberace, Bill Cosby, Cary Grant, Sid Ceasar, Jay Leno, Mel Torme, and
Gregory Peck; and
WHEREAS, The Rialto became a cornerstone for commercial development
that helped make Joilet's central business district a Mecca of shopping
and entertainment; it was renovated and restored in 1980, and now is
considered a historical landmark; and
WHEREAS, Through Joliet's prosperity and lean times, the Rialto has
been at its center as a movie palace; the Rialto has transformed from
being strictly a movie house to becoming a regional performing arts
center; it is currently operated by over 300 dedicated volunteers who
help serve patrons as ushers, bartenders, hospitality hosts and office
help; and
WHEREAS, The Rialto Square Theatre continues to serve the greater
Joliet area and Will County through its programs and facilities not
only for the performing arts but also commercial retail space in
Joliet's City Center; therefore, be it

Pehrkon is retiring on April 30, 2001 from 23 years of service as a
Trustee of Crete Township; and
WHEREAS, Frederick August Carl Pehrkon was born in 1917 in Crete,
Illinois to Fritz and Lizzie Pehrkon; his parents owned the Blacksmith
Shop on Main Street now known as Quality Welding; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Pehrkon attended Crete Elementary, Bloom High School,
Crete High School, and graduated from Peotone High School, where he was
a star basketball player; after graduation, Mr. Pehrkon was drafted in
the United States Army in June of 1941 and served until 1945; and
WHEREAS, In November 1942, Frederick Pehrkon married Dorothy
Duensing; after his service in the Army was completed, he returned to
Crete and began working at Steger Furniture Manufacturing Co., where he
was later appointed as Plant Superintendent; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Pehrkon was appointed to the Crete Township Fire
Protection District Board, where he served for thirteen years, many as
its President; in 1978, he was appointed to the Crete Township Board to
fill the unexpired term of Sandy Nielsen, and has served ever since;
and
WHEREAS, Mr. Pehrkon has been an active member of the Local Amvet
Post since its establishment, holding offices from Commander to Fish
Fry Chairman; he is also a member of Trinity Lutheran Church; and
WHEREAS, After his retirement, Frederick Pehrkon worked with Ann
Bakker in the mentoring program at Crete Elementary School; he also
found time to care for and stay with Wendell Regnier, John Munz, Pete
Piepenbrink, Vic Behrens, and John Lazaros when they needed his
assistance; and
WHEREAS, Frederick Pehrkon is looking forward to spending his
retirement with his family who include his wife, Dorothy; his
daughters, Anne Pehrkon and Joan (husband, Larry) Wieggel; and his

J. "Tony" Bruns is retiring from a career of 21 years of service to the
United States Air Force; and
WHEREAS, Master Sergeant Anthony J. Bruns graduated from
Collinsville High School in 1980, the NCO Leadership School at the
Little Rock Air Force Base in Arkansas in 1988, and the NCO Academy at
the Lackland Air Force Base in Texas in 1993; he received his
Associates of Applied Science in aircraft maintenance technology at the
Community College of the Air Force, and completed course work at the
Senior NCO Academy; and
WHEREAS, Master Segeant Bruns entered the United States Air Force
in 1980; during his 21 year career he has held a variety of positions
at both the command and squadron levels; in addition, he served in
numerous assignments that include service as the Superintendent of
Operations of the 76 Airlift Squadron at the Ramstein Air Base in
Germany; Production Superintendent at the Sigonella Navel Air Station
in Sicily; and as aircraft quality assurance inspector at the Scott Air
Force Base in Illinois; and
WHEREAS, Master Sergeant Bruns currently serves as the senior
logistics controller for the Logistics Readiness Center at the
Headquarters Air Mobility Command, Scott Air Force Base, in Illinois;
he is responsible for the global recovery of all AMC and AMC-gained

aircraft supporting United Nations, Presidential, Department of
Defense, and command tanker and airlift missions; and

Arthur L. "Roy" Deacon, who passed away on March 29, 2001; and
WHEREAS, Arthur L. Roy was born on July 1, 1925 in Winchester,
Illinois to Frank and Ethel Johnson Deacon; he completed his primary
and secondary education at the Beardstown schools; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Deacon served during World War II in the United States
Navy as a Second Mate on numerous ships that included the USS
Housatonic, the NTS Great Lakes Illinois, the USS Narrier, the USS
Chickadee, the USS Quail, and the USS Pochard; during his service with
the United States Navy, he was the recipient of several medals and
commendations, including an American Area Ribbon, the
European-African-Middle Eastern Ribbon, the Asiatic Pacific Ribbon, the
Philippine Liberation Ribbon, and a Good Conduct Ribbon; he was also a
life member of the Guthrie-Pierce VFW Post 1239 in Beardstown; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Deacon retired in 1983 after 23 years of service with
International Harvester in Canton; he had a great love for the game of
baseball, and this passion continued as he coached and managed Little
League and Pony League baseball teams in Beardstown; Mr. Deacon was
also an avid reader, and enjoyed writing poems and songs; and
WHEREAS, The passing of Arthur L Deacon will be deeply felt by all
who knew and loved him, especially his wife of 56 years, Erma; his

Waukegan, Illinois, is celebrating its 75th anniversary in April, 2001;
and
WHEREAS, St. Anastasia Parish was founded in April of 1926 when
Father John Fleming was sent to Waukegan by George Cardinal Mundelein
to undertake the building of a new church on the northern fringe of the

town; and
WHEREAS, Father Fleming and the first group of parishioners were
welcomed by the Sisters of the Holy Child Jesus as they celebrated mass
on the grounds of the Holy Child High School while the new church was
under construction; in 1927, St. Anastasia Church and School were
completed and dedicated in October of 1927; and
WHEREAS, St. Anastasia Parish's welcoming spirit has become
tradition for seventy-five years as a faith community serving its
parishioners and students; its tradition continues today through a
dedicated ministry to its children, to the hungry, the homeless, and

with dedication for twenty-eight years; during his tenure as a trustee
he was appointed to a variety of committees including the Police and
Civil Defense Committee, the Finance Committee, the Fire Department,
the Legislative and Transportation Committee, and Public Safety
Committee; and
WHEREAS, In addition to his duties as a village trustee, Ron
Cunningham served as an active member of the Antioch Fire Department
from 1959 until 1982, as Assistant Chief Engineer, as an inactive
member of the Antioch Fire Department from 1982 to the present day, and
as past President of the Antioch Fire Department; he is also a member
of the Antioch Moose Lodge; and
WHEREAS, Ron Cunningham is supported by his loving family, which

teacher, Frederic Norden is turning in his lesson plans, his graded
papers, his atrium-like classroom, his summer school request forms, his
computer technology skills, and his more than 300 accumulated sick

WHEREAS, Frederic Norden began his teaching career at Spencer
Elementary School in Chicago's Austin neighborhood and is retiring this
year from neighboring John Hay Community Academy; and
WHEREAS, During his career, Frederic Norden provided students with
learning in the classroom, laughter in the halls, and friendship to all
who entered his school; he developed a reputation as a hard-working,
responsible, and dedicated teaching professional; no problem was too
large, no question too ridiculous, and no situation was too difficult
for Mr. Norden to handle; and
WHEREAS, For all the students who made up the mosaic of Frederic
Norden's teaching career, the one who listened in class, those who
asked questions, the ones who daydreamed, those who laughed, and all
the ones who learned were fortunate to be guided by an unselfish
individual whose greatest joy was seeing them succeed; and
WHEREAS, Frederic Norden is loved and respected most for his
everlasting devotion to his family, which includes his wife, Elaine,
his children, David and Elizabeth, his daughter-in-law, Aileen, and his
grandchildren, Wyatt Austin and Seamus Daniel; his commitment to
helping his own children realize their own dreams and achieve their
goals serves as an example to the generosity he brought to the

to express their sincere condolences to the family and friends of
Gerald E. "Griz" England, who passed away on April 15, 2001; and
WHEREAS, Gerald E. England was born on February 1, 1949, in
Decatur, Illinois to Ernest and Mary Risley England; and
WHEREAS, "Griz" England was well-known to many radio listeners in
Central Illinois where he enjoyed a long radio career that began in
Sullivan, Illinois; he worked at several area radio stations and made a
national name for himself as a country radio personality; while working
in Decatur radio, he began a series of "Merry Griz-mas" concerts at
Decatur's Lincoln Square Theatre, where he brought his music and gentle
sense of humor to thousands of Central Illinoisans in its sellout
performances; he received national attention as a finalist for the
Marconi Award for best Morning Personality in America; and
WHEREAS, In 1998, Mr. England signed off the airwaves after more
than 25 years, and was elected Moultrie County Clerk; and
WHEREAS, Gerald England was a member of the Kiwanis Club, the CEFS
Board, and First Christian Church of Sullivan; and
WHEREAS, The passing of Gerald E. "Griz" England will be deeply
felt by all who knew and loved him, especially his wife, Georgia; his
sons, A. Michael Hoff II and Ernest Scott England; his daughters,
Angela M. Block and Jodi A. England; his grandchildren, Cailin and

aspiration of all its members to maintain quality craftsmanship,
regulate safe working conditions, and secure a fair wage for all
persons working in the carpenters trades; and
WHEREAS, Today this organization has grown to be Local Union No.

covering Macon County, and portions of Moultrie, Piatt, and Sangamon
counties; and
WHEREAS, The citizens of Decatur and the surrounding communities
