2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
3 | | learn of the death of John J. Spillane, who passed away at the |
4 | | age of 52; and |
5 | | WHEREAS, John Spillane was born on February 1, 1964 at |
6 | | Loretto Hospital in Chicago to Richard
and Annette (Busse) |
7 | | Spillane, and moved immediately thereafter to Oak Park, where |
8 | | he would live,
work, play and be of service the rest of his |
9 | | life; he was the third of the 11 children, seven boys and four |
10 | | girls, in
the family; and
|
11 | | WHEREAS, John Spillane attended Ascension grade school, |
12 | | graduating in 1978, Oak Park River Forest High School,
|
13 | | graduating in 1982, and the University of Illinois-Chicago, |
14 | | graduating in 1988 with a Bachelor of Science,
having studied |
15 | | finance and management; he was a natural athlete, a wrestler, |
16 | | mathematician and carpenter,
who apprenticed in carpentry at an |
17 | | early age with his grandfather, Raymond Busse; he also played
|
18 | | trombone, including as the first chair at Ascension Grade |
19 | | School under orchestra conductor, Richard
Ramey; he also worked |
20 | | as a home rehabber and carpenter with his father; and
|
21 | | WHEREAS, John Spillane suffered from epilepsy as a child |
22 | | and developed an empathy for people and animals in
physical or |

1 | | emotional pain; and
|
2 | | WHEREAS, John Spillane was an accomplished wrestler and |
3 | | often protected and stood up for the weak, young, old,
infirm, |
4 | | and the less fortunate; he was especially loved by the senior |
5 | | citizens of his community, in particular, Rose Breen, who was |
6 | | an Irish immigrant and a survivor of the Irish Potato Famine, |
7 | | and Dorothy
Ross; he advocated successfully for 10 years to |
8 | | require that the utilities responsible for the environmental
|
9 | | contamination of Barrie Park in Oak Park participate in the |
10 | | remediation of the park and surrounding homes; and |
11 | | WHEREAS, John Spillane began his real estate career in |
12 | | 1999, partnering with his brother, William Spillane, to found
|
13 | | Spillane Realty, and with his other brother, Joe Spillane, to |
14 | | rehab many Oak Park homes, always putting quality ahead
of |
15 | | profits; he was a past-president of the Oak Park Board of |
16 | | Realtors and an award-winning Realtor with
RE/MAX Realty; he |
17 | | was inducted into the RE/MAX Hall of Fame; he worked tirelessly |
18 | | to identify those
properties which best suited his clients |
19 | | needs; and |
20 | | WHEREAS, John Spillane was devoted to his wife, Karri, and |
21 | | his daughters, Samantha and Kaitlyn; he was an exuberant
coach |
22 | | and fan of his daughters' soccer and softball teams and will be |
23 | | remembered as a husband and father who
put his family ahead of |

1 | | his career; he greeted his daughters every day with "Good |
2 | | morning, Beautiful"; and |
3 | | WHEREAS, John Spillane was known for his exuberance, humor, |
4 | | helpfulness, generosity, good nature, and conviction;
he was an |
5 | | engaging and enthusiastic storyteller, always touting the |
6 | | strengths of others and remaining humble
about his own |
7 | | achievements; and
|
8 | | WHEREAS, John Spillane was preceded in death by his beloved |
9 | | parents, Richard and Annette, and by his fellow wrestler
and |
10 | | musician brother, Patrick; and
|
11 | | WHEREAS, John Spillane is survived by his wife, Karri |
12 | | (Compton); his daughters, Samantha Mary, and Kaitlyn
Marie; his |
13 | | siblings, Mary Ellen Stauffenberg, Joseph (Kelly), Kathleen |
14 | | (Wesley) Helms, Susan (Jane) Larkin,
Daniel (Betsy), Michael |
15 | | (Gretchen), William (Heidi), Mary Anne, and David (Patrick); |
16 | | his in-laws, Glenn and
Nancy Compton; his brothers-in-law, |
17 | | Glenn (Mary Lou), and Gerry (Greta) Compton; and his many |
18 | | nieces,
nephews, and friends; therefore, be it

19 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL |
20 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of |
21 | | John Spillane, and extend our sincere condolences to his |
22 | | family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it |
