SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Glen Barton of Peoria, who passed away on
4October 24, 2016; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Glen Barton was born on August 20, 1939 in Alton,
6Missouri; his parents were Albert Lee and Jessie Eugenia
7Smith-Barton; he married Phyllis "Polly" Hayes on July 30, 1993
8in Vista, California; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Glen Barton earned his civil engineering degree
10from the University of Missouri in 1961; and
 
11    WHEREAS, After college, Glen Barton began his career at
12Caterpillar, where he worked until his retirement as Chairman
13and CEO in 2004; as Chairman and CEO, he led Caterpillar to
14focus on safety and was a driving force of Six Sigma, which
15focused on improvement to product quality and customer
16satisfaction; he was instrumental in the creation of the
17National Mining Association; he was also a tireless champion
18for education and supported the formation of "Common Ground",
19Caterpillar's educational program created for school children;
20and
 
21    WHEREAS, Glen Barton was an inductee into the Order of the

1British Empire; he was inducted into the National Mining Hall
2of Fame and was awarded the Robert Michel Award for Lifetime
3Achievement by the Creve Coeur Club; he was also nominated as a
4Local Legend and was awarded the University of Missouri Honor
5Award for Distinguished Service in Engineering in 1999; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Glen Barton was a member of the Bradley Board of
7Trustees for two terms and served as Chairman of the Board from
82000 to 2002; he served on the Eureka College Board; he served
9as President of the export council (GWB) from 2005 to 2006 and
10was a board member for the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality
11Award; he participated in the American Mining Association Board
12of Directors; he was a member of the Business Roundtable and
13Business Council; he served as Chairman of CONEXPO/MINEXPO for
14over 10 years; he served as Chair of the Manufacturer's
15Association (CIMA) and the National Mining Association; he also
16chaired the Capital Campaign for the Red Cross, co-chaired the
17Capital Campaign for WTVP, and was the Founding Director of
18Quest Charter Academy; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Glen Barton truly believed in and was committed to
20the Peoria community, especially in education, recreation, and
21the arts; he was a major advocate for health care charities and
22donated to many major local infrastructures, including the
23local Red Cross Chapter building, the WTVP Digital Conversion
24and their new building, the Riverfront Museum, Glen Oak Park,

1African charities, the Barton Pavilion and Children's
2Playhouse, OSF Hospice, UNICOMP Cancer Center, Pere Marquette
3Hotel, and River Trails Apartments; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Glen Barton was preceded in death by his parents;
5his brother, C. Dean Barton; and his grandchild, Tanner; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Glen Barton is survived by his wife, Polly; his
7children, Jennifer (Brian) Dieter, Jeffery (Susan) Barton,
8Angela Hamernik, and Amy (Tim) Samons; his grandchildren,
9Rachel, Abby, Noah, George, Madison, Parker, Morgan, Tyler, and
10Brady; his sister, JoAnne Barton; and his brother, Howard Earl
11(Judy) Barton; therefore, be it
 
12    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL
13ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with his
14family and friends, mourn the passing of Glen Barton; and be it
15further
 
16    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
17presented to the family of Glen Barton as an expression of our
18sympathy.
