SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of George L. Harlow, who passed away on
4December 15, 2015; and
 
5    WHEREAS, George Harlow was born on February 19, 1924 in
6Waukegan and lived in Waukegan for most of his life; his
7parents were Oscar and Mabel Harlow; and
 
8    WHEREAS, George Harlow graduated from Waukegan Township
9High School after attending North and Washington Grade Schools
10in Waukegan; he later attended the University of Illinois
11Extension in Chicago while employed by the Wetzel and Turner
12Buick-Chevrolet Agency as a service and sales administrative
13assistant; and
 
14    WHEREAS, George Harlow was a sales representative for the
15Johns Manville Friction Material Division of St. Louis,
16Missouri, covering the north and central United States; he
17joined the Bank of Waukegan in 1967 and worked in every
18department of the bank, finally concentrating his efforts in
19the commercial lending and trust departments as the Senior Vice
20President and trust officer; and
 
21    WHEREAS, George Harlow was a former member of the Waukegan

1Jaycees and the Waukegan Elks Lodge; he was a member of the
2Waukegan City Club, Ducks Unlimited, American Legion Post 281,
3Waukegan AMVETS, the Purple Heart Association, the Navy League
4of the United States, the American Ex-Prisoners of War
5Association, the Eighth Air Force Second Air Division
6Association, the Eighth Air Force Historical Society, the 445th
7Bomb Group, the Caterpillar Parachute Club, and the Waukegan
8Yacht Club; he was a member of the Lake County Contractors
9Association, serving on the Board of Directors as Treasurer for
10eight years and then serving on the Board of Governors as an
11Associate Representative; he was a member of the Glen Flora
12Country Club for 63 years, serving on the Board of Governors
13for seven years, holding the Office of President in 1970, and
14serving on various committees for over 32 years; he was the
15writer and editor of the club newsletter known as "The Caddy"
16in the 1960s and 1970s and later the writer-editor of the
17newsletter known as "The Communicator", which was distributed
18for many years; and
 
19    WHEREAS, George Harlow served in the United States Army Air
20Force during World War II; he served one tour of flight duty in
21the Caribbean and then traveled by way of South America,
22Africa, and French Morocco to a permanent Eighth Air Force base
23in Norwich, England; his Liberator bomber was shot down in a
24raid over Germany in the winter of 1943-1944; after parachuting
25in the German mountains, he was taken prisoner by the German SS

1and spent one and a half years in three different prison camps
2in East Prussia, Poland, and Germany; he escaped to the English
3front in April of 1945 and was flown to Oxford, England, where
4he was hospitalized for seven weeks; his decorations include
5the American and European Theatre Ribbons, the Army Good
6Conduct Medal, the Victory Medal, an Air Force Commendation,
7the French Croix de Guerre with Palm, the Prisoner of War
8Medal, the Air Medal, the Purple Heart, and a Presidential Unit
9Citation; in late 1945, his bomb group, the Eighth Air Force
10445th Bomb Group, was awarded the American Order of the French
11Croix de Guerre by the country of France, only the third
12American bomb group ever so honored; and
 
13    WHEREAS, George Harlow was preceded in death by his
14parents; and
 
15    WHEREAS, George Harlow is survived by his wife, Sandy; his
16children, Jody (Patrick) Rouse, Sue (Jeff) Martinson, Dan
17McLaughlin, and David McLaughlin; and his grandchildren, Derek
18McLaughlin, Joseph Rouse, Olivia Rouse, and George Martinson;
19therefore, be it
 
20    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL
21ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with his
22family and friends, mourn the passing of George L. Harlow; and
23be it further

3our sympathy.
