|
2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
3 | | learn of the death of Albert Denis McCoy, who passed away on |
4 | | March 26, 2016; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Albert McCoy was born on June 25, 1926 in Aurora; |
6 | | his parents were Denis and Katherine McCoy; and
|
7 | | WHEREAS, Albert McCoy attended St. Mary's Catholic Grade |
8 | | School and graduated from Marmion Academy with the Class of |
9 | | 1944; and
|
10 | | WHEREAS, Albert McCoy was a combat veteran of World War II, |
11 | | serving as a signalman in the United States Navy aboard the |
12 | | aircraft carrier USS Monterey in the South Pacific; he |
13 | | participated in the Battle of Okinawa, the Japan main island |
14 | | campaigns, and was present with the 3rd Fleet in Tokyo Bay |
15 | | during the surrender of Japan on September 2, 1945; he received |
16 | | 5 Battle Stars for his service during World War II; and
|
17 | | WHEREAS, After the war, Albert McCoy returned to Aurora and |
18 | | attended Aurora University; he then received a football |
19 | | scholarship to the University of Montana in Missoula, where he |
20 | | also was a member of the baseball team; he remained active in |
21 | | sports his entire life and served as a college football referee |

1 | | for 21 years; after college, he returned home and served as the |
2 | | assistant controller of R & M Kaufmann in downtown Aurora, |
3 | | where he met his wife, Mary Ann; and
|
4 | | WHEREAS, In 1965, at the age of 38, Albert McCoy was |
5 | | elected to serve as Mayor of the City of Aurora; he served |
6 | | three terms as mayor from 1965 to 1977; during his tenure as |
7 | | mayor, Aurora annexed 6,800 acres of land which gave rise to |
8 | | Aurora's current distinction as the second largest city in |
9 | | Illinois; after leaving the office of mayor, he served as |
10 | | Chairman of the Illinois Liquor Control Commission from 1977 to |
11 | | 1998; he was also Vice President of the Old Second National |
12 | | Bank in Aurora for 14 years; and
|
13 | | WHEREAS, Albert McCoy was active in numerous local civic |
14 | | and charitable organizations during his life; he was a member |
15 | | of Holy Angels Parish for over 50 years and served as a lector |
16 | | for 28 years; he was a member of the Serra Club of Aurora for 25 |
17 | | years; he was also a recipient of the Marmion Centurion Award |
18 | | and was the fourth recipient of the Marmion Ad Regnum Dei Award |
19 | | in recognition of exceptional public witness and service of |
20 | | Gospel values for the Kingdom of God; and
|
21 | | WHEREAS, Albert McCoy is survived by his son, Mike (Vicki) |
22 | | McCoy; his daughter, Cara (John) Gibbons; his grandchildren, |
23 | | Joe, Mark, and Kate McCoy and Elizabeth and Sarah Gibbons; and |

1 | | his many nieces and nephews; and |
2 | | WHEREAS, Albert McCoy was preceded in death by his wife, |
3 | | Mary Ann McCoy; his parents; his brother, Gerald (Betty) McCoy; |
4 | | and his sister, Alice (Clyde) Hess; therefore, be it
|
5 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL |
6 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with his |
7 | | family and friends, mourn the passing of Albert Denis McCoy; |
8 | | and be it further
|
9 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
10 | | presented to the family of Albert McCoy as an expression of our |
11 | | sympathy.
