| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, 795 million people globally experience hunger | ||||||
3 | every day; and
| ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, Because of a lack of food, millions of the world's | ||||||
5 | poor are left stunted, blind, and afflicted with developmental | ||||||
6 | disabilities; countless others are continually weakened by | ||||||
7 | anemia and are condemned to do little more than survive; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, 45.3 million people live in poverty in the United | ||||||
9 | States; 14.7 million of them are children; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Nearly 15% of United States households, or | ||||||
11 | approximately 49 million Americans, including 15.9 million | ||||||
12 | children, experience hunger or food insecurity, which can | ||||||
13 | produce physical, mental, and social impairments; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Although substantial progress has been made in | ||||||
15 | reducing the incidence of hunger and food insecurity in the | ||||||
16 | United States and around the world, millions of people remain | ||||||
17 | vulnerable to hunger and the negative effects of food | ||||||
18 | deprivation; and
| ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, According to the United Nations Food and | ||||||
20 | Agriculture Organization, the percentage of the world's |

1 | population that is undernourished has decreased from 23.4% in | ||||||
2 | 1990-1992 to 13.5% in 2012-2014; therefore, be it
| ||||||
3 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL | ||||||
4 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we call upon all | ||||||
5 | elected leaders in state legislatures, the United States | ||||||
6 | Congress, and the President to make it a top priority to end | ||||||
7 | hunger by 2030; and be it further
| ||||||
8 | RESOLVED, That we call upon Congress and the President to | ||||||
9 | provide adequate and consistent funding for the Women, Infant | ||||||
10 | and Children (WIC) Program and the Supplemental Nutrition | ||||||
11 | Assistance Program (SNAP); and be it further | ||||||
12 | RESOLVED, That we recognize the unique power of churches, | ||||||
13 | schools, communities, local charities, and people of good will | ||||||
14 | to generate the political will to help end hunger by 2030; and | ||||||
15 | be it further | ||||||
16 | RESOLVED, That we recognize the importance of government | ||||||
17 | policy to help end hunger and join the world in endorsing the | ||||||
18 | goal to end hunger in the United States and around the world by | ||||||
19 | 2030; and be it further | ||||||
20 | RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be | ||||||
21 | delivered to the President and Vice President of the United |

3 | appropriate.
