SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of John R. Dahl of Savoy, who passed away on
4January 15, 2016; and
 
5    WHEREAS, John Dahl was born in Tacoma, Washington to
6Margaret and John Dahl on November 6, 1923; he served in the
7United States Army Air Force with the 8th Army Air Force in
8England during World War II; upon returning to the U.S., he was
9hospitalized at Peterson Field, Colorado Springs, Colorado,
10where he met and married his nurse, Lieutenant Violet R.
11Holdiman; he graduated from the University of Washington in
12Seattle, where he rowed on the crew as an undergraduate; he
13earned his Master of Arts in History after the war; and
 
14    WHEREAS, John Dahl began his teaching career at the
15University of Northern Iowa; he then taught in the public
16schools of Minneapolis and Edina, Minnesota, before coming to
17the University of Illinois in 1967; in 1963, he was selected as
18a John Hay Fellow in the Humanities at Yale University, where
19he was also an Honorary Fellow of Calhoun College; he was also
20an adjunct professor in the M.A.T. Program; prior to his
21retirement from the University of Illinois in 1989, he was a
22member of the National Humanities Faculty; he was also a member
23of the Board of the Athletic Association, an Associate Chairman

1of the Department of History, and Chairman of the Faculty
2Advisory Committee for the Newman Foundation; and
 
3    WHEREAS, John Dahl was a professed member of the Secular
4Franciscan Order for over 50 years; he served as an officer of
5the Sierra Club of Champaign-Urbana, including 2 terms as
6President and as District Governor for clubs in Illinois and
7northern Indiana; at St. Matthew's, he was a lector and
8Eucharistic minister; and
 
9    WHEREAS, John Dahl was preceded in death by his parents; a
10younger brother; and his son-in-law, Kenneth Newman; and
 
11    WHEREAS, John Dahl is survived by his beloved wife, Violet;
12his 2 daughters, Maureen Newman and Lisa (Brian) McClean; his 2
13grandsons, Sean McClean and Christopher Newman; and his 2
14great-grandchildren, Kimberly and Jacob Newman; therefore, be
15it
 
16    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL
17ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
18John R. Dahl, and extend our sincere condolences to his family,
19friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further
 
20    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
21presented to the family of John Dahl as an expression of our
