2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of George L. Harlow of Waukegan, who passed | ||||||
4 | away on December 15, 2015; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, George Harlow was born in Waukegan on February 19, | ||||||
6 | 1924 to Oscar and Mabel Harlow and lived in Waukegan most of | ||||||
7 | his life; he graduated from Waukegan Township High School after | ||||||
8 | attending North and Washington grade schools in Waukegan; and | ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, George Harlow served in the United States Army Air | ||||||
10 | Force, during World War II; he had one tour of flight duty in | ||||||
11 | the Caribbean and then, traveling by way of South America, | ||||||
12 | Africa, and French Morocco, reached his permanent station, the | ||||||
13 | 8th Air Force base in Norwich, England; his Liberator Bomber | ||||||
14 | was shot down in a raid over Germany in the winter of 1943-44, | ||||||
15 | and, after parachuting into the German mountains, was taken | ||||||
16 | prisoner by the German SS and spent a year and a half in 3 | ||||||
17 | different prison camps located in East Prussia, Poland, and | ||||||
18 | Germany; he escaped to the English front in April of 1945 and | ||||||
19 | was then flown to Oxford, England, where he was hospitalized | ||||||
20 | for 7 weeks; his decorations include the American and European | ||||||
21 | Theatre Ribbons, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the Victory | ||||||
22 | Medal, the Air Force Commendation, the French Croix de Guerre | ||||||
23 | with Palm Medal, the Prisoner of War Medal, the Air Medal, the |

1 | Purple Heart, and the Presidential Unit Citation; in late 1945, | ||||||
2 | his bomb group, the 8th Air Force 445th Bomb Group, was awarded | ||||||
3 | the American Order of the French Croix de Guerre by the country | ||||||
4 | of France, only the third American bomb group ever so honored; | ||||||
5 | and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, After the war, George Harlow attended the | ||||||
7 | University of Illinois Extension in Chicago, while employed by | ||||||
8 | the Wetzel and Turner Buick-Chevrolet Agency as a Service and | ||||||
9 | Sales Administrative Assistant; he worked as a sales | ||||||
10 | representative for the Johns Manville Friction Material | ||||||
11 | Division of St. Louis, Missouri, covering the North-Central | ||||||
12 | United States; he joined the Bank of Waukegan in 1967 and | ||||||
13 | worked in every department of the bank, finally concentrating | ||||||
14 | his efforts in the Commercial Lending and Trust Departments as | ||||||
15 | the Senior Vice-President and Trust Officer; and
| ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, George Harlow was a former member of the Waukegan | ||||||
17 | Jaycees and the Waukegan Elks Lodge; he was a member of the | ||||||
18 | Waukegan City Club, Ducks Unlimited, American Legion Post 281, | ||||||
19 | Waukegan AMVETS, the Purple Heart Association, Navy League of | ||||||
20 | the United States, the American Ex-Prisoners of War | ||||||
21 | Association, the 8th Air Force Second Air Division Association, | ||||||
22 | the 8th Air Force Historical Society, the 445th Bomb Group, the | ||||||
23 | Caterpillar Parachute Club, and the Waukegan Yacht Club; he was | ||||||
24 | a member of the Lake County Contractors Association, serving on |

| |||||||
1 | the Board of Directors as Treasurer for 8 years and then | ||||||
2 | serving on the Board of Governors as an Associate | ||||||
3 | Representative; he was a member of the Glen Flora Country Club | ||||||
4 | for 63 years, serving on the Board of Governors for 7 years, | ||||||
5 | holding the Office of President in 1970 and serving on various | ||||||
6 | committees for over 32 years; he was the writer-editor of the | ||||||
7 | club newsletter known as The Caddy in the 1960s and 1970s and | ||||||
8 | later the writer-editor of the country club newsletter known as | ||||||
9 | The Communicator, which was distributed for many years; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, George Harlow was preceded in death by his | ||||||
11 | parents; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, George Harlow is survived by Sandy, the love of | ||||||
13 | his life, daughter Jody (Patrick) Rouse, Sue (Jeff) Martinson, | ||||||
14 | Dan McLaughlin, David McLaughlin, grandchildren Derek | ||||||
15 | McLaughlin, Joseph Rouse, Olivia Rouse and George Martinson; | ||||||
16 | therefore, be it

17 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL | ||||||
18 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
19 | George L. Harlow, and extend our sincere condolences to his | ||||||
20 | family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | ||||||
21 | further

22 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
