SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Kathryn Dooley Dunn, who passed away on
4June 18, 2015; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Kathryn Dunn was born in Chicago on October 29,
61927 to Dr. Harry J. and Marion E. (nee Culhane) Dooley; she
7graduated from Trinity High School in River Forest at the age
8of 16 and went on to study at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College
9in Terre Haute, Indiana and then at the University of Chicago,
10where she received a bachelor's degree in interdepartmental
11pre-medical studies; she had been committed to a life and
12career of service from an early age; she studied at Loyola
13University Chicago's Medical School as a graduate student in
14physiology and met and married fellow medical student, Paul J.
15Dunn in 1951; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Kathryn Dunn and Paul Dunn became active in the
17Christian Family Movement and served as Chairs of the Pre-Cana
18programs and on the Board of Directors of the Pre-Cana programs
19and the Cana Conference of the Archdiocese of Chicago; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Kathryn Dunn and her husband brought together a
21group of people and ultimately founded the Alcuin Montessori
22School in Oak Park in 1961, the second Montessori School in the

1United States and the first in the Midwest, which has now been
2operating continuously for 54 years; she was a co-founder and
3served as Vice-President of the Illinois Montessori Society and
4was a member of Alcuin's Board of Directors; she also received
5the American Montessori Society certification as a Montessori
6Directress; and
 
7    WHEREAS, In November of 1964, Kathryn Dunn and her husband
8purchased a 260-acre working dairy farm in Ferryville,
9Wisconsin as a vacation home for their still-growing family;
10the family spent numerous summers at the farm, which the family
11still owns, and they made the farm their retirement home in
122004, before moving to Viroqua, Wisconsin in 2012; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Kathryn and Paul Dunn became interested in the
14Doman-Delacato method of treating brain-injured children; Paul
15founded the Chicago Center for the Achievement of Human
16Potential in 1967 with the help of Motorola CEO Paul Galvin; he
17served as the Center's Medical Director and Kathryn designed
18and directed the Center's Visual Motor Integration Program; as
19part of their work at the Chicago Center, Kathryn and Paul
20became increasingly interested in integrative, holistic
21approaches to medicine; in order to pursue these ideas in
22depth, Paul returned to private practice and, with Kathryn,
23founded the Center for Integrative Treatment and Biochemical
24Nutrition in Oak Park, one of the first such practices in

1Illinois; Kathryn joined the staff of the Center as a Certified
2Clinical Nutritionist; she also lectured extensively at a
3number of Midwestern colleges and universities and served as
4Vice-President of the International and American Associations
5of Clinical Nutritionists; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Kathryn Dunn was preceded in death by her husband,
7Paul; her parents; and her sister, Marian Sterling; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Kathryn Dunn is survived by her 10 children, Chris
9(Beth) Dunn, Brian (Deb) Dunn, Paul Dunn, Jr., Peter Dunn,
10Michael Dunn, Mark (Ann) Dunn, John (Alexa) Dunn, Sarah Dunn,
11Jeff Dunn, and Julie Dunn; her 9 grandchildren, Zeke Dunn,
12Molly Dunn, Kelly Barnd, Jacob Barnd, Jack Dunn, Patrick Dunn,
13Katie Dunn, Ian Dunn, and Raleigh Dunn; other relatives; and
14many friends; therefore, be it
 
15    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL
16ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
17Kathryn Dooley Dunn, and extend our sincere condolences to her
18family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it
19further
 
20    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
21presented to the family of Kathryn Dunn as an expression of our
22deepest sympathy.
