2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of Pastor Ivin Lamont Phillips, Sr. of | ||||||
4 | Chicago, who passed away on October 24, 2015; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Pastor Phillips was born in Chicago on April 7, | ||||||
6 | 1960 to John Wesley and Cora Mae Phillips; he was a member of | ||||||
7 | Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church, where he was baptized by | ||||||
8 | his father and served as a choir member, deacon, and Sunday | ||||||
9 | school teacher; he attended Crane High School, Lamar Community | ||||||
10 | College, and the University of Illinois at Chicago, playing | ||||||
11 | basketball at each; he obtained his TV/radio certification from | ||||||
12 | the Illinois Technical Institute and he attended the Washburn | ||||||
13 | Trade School, where he became a licensed electrician; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Pastor Phillips worked in the electrician field | ||||||
15 | for over 20 years; and
| ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, Pastor Phillips accepted his call to preach in | ||||||
17 | 1992 and became a licensed and ordained minister; he became the | ||||||
18 | Pastor of Hopewell M. B. Church after the passing of his father | ||||||
19 | in 1998; he
completed the vision started by his dad, moving | ||||||
20 | Hopewell from the old location to its present
in 2001; he | ||||||
21 | served faithfully for 17 years and during his leadership,
the | ||||||
22 | membership increased and various community outreach programs |

1 | were added; he graduated from Faith Seminary, where he obtained | ||||||
2 | his Doctorate in Ministry and
Master of Theological Studies; he | ||||||
3 | also studied abroad in Israel; he pursued classes at Bill | ||||||
4 | Winston Bible College and Moody Bible Institute and was also a
| ||||||
5 | certified chaplain; and | ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Pastor Phillips was fondly known as "Ivo" by his | ||||||
7 | basketball buddies and their team, "Cheat You Fair", enjoyed | ||||||
8 | several championships together; he coached the Memorial Park | ||||||
9 | Traveling Wildcats basketball team and was known as "Coach | ||||||
10 | Phillips" to many in the Bellwood Community; and | ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Pastor Phillips served as 1st Vice-President from | ||||||
12 | 2010 to 2014 of the Sunlight District Congress of
Christian | ||||||
13 | Education and taught extensively throughout the State; he was a | ||||||
14 | member of the United Baptist State Convention of Illinois; he | ||||||
15 | preached at the National Baptist Convention, USA in 2013 and | ||||||
16 | served
with Inter Faith Illinois and Proviso Township | ||||||
17 | Ministerial Alliance Network; and
| ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, Pastor Phillips is survived by his wife of 25 | ||||||
19 | years, Jeanette Phillips; his 2 sons, Ivin Lamont Phillips Jr. | ||||||
20 | and
Jarvis Lamont Phillips; his mother, Cora Mae Phillips; his | ||||||
21 | 8 brothers, John Douglas (Willie Mae),
Michael (Juanita), | ||||||
22 | Robert (Linda), Elder Jerry (Geraldine), James (Beverly), | ||||||
23 | Winston (Cheryl),
Minister Autry (Cheryl), and Victor (Kisha); |

1 | his 2 sisters, Gloria and Felicia; his father-in-law, Dennis
| ||||||
2 | Beasley; his 2 sisters-in-law, Cheryl Beasley and Katrina | ||||||
3 | Beasley; his brother-in-law, Tim

4 | uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and church
family; | ||||||
5 | and his fathers in the ministry, Pastor Curtis Brooks and | ||||||
6 | Emeritus C.L. Brookins; therefore, be it

7 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL | ||||||
8 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
9 | Pastor Ivin Lamont Phillips, Sr., and extend our sincere | ||||||
10 | condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved | ||||||
11 | him; and be it further

12 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
13 | presented to the family of Pastor Phillips as an expression of | ||||||
14 | our deepest sympathy.
