2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
3 | | learn of the death of Richard Anthony "Dick" Stanfel, Sr., who |
4 | | passed away on June 22, 2015; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Richard Stanfel, Sr. was born on July 20, 1927 in |
6 | | San Francisco, California; his parents were Peter and Anne |
7 | | Stanfel; and
|
8 | | WHEREAS, Richard Stanfel, Sr. played college football at |
9 | | the University of San Francisco and was drafted in the second |
10 | | round of the 1951 NFL Draft; he later played for the Detroit |
11 | | Lions from 1952 to 1955 and the Washington Redskins from 1956 |
12 | | to 1958; while playing for the Lions, he won 2 NFL |
13 | | Championships in 1952 and 1953 and earned two Pro Bowl |
14 | | selections in 1953 and 1955; after the 1953 championship |
15 | | season, he was voted by his teammates to be MVP, the only |
16 | | offensive lineman to ever receive this distinction; in 1956, he |
17 | | was traded to the Redskins, where he earned 3 straight Pro Bowl |
18 | | honors from 1956 to 1958; he was named to the National Football |
19 | | League 1950s All-Decade Team and was named one of the 70 |
20 | | Greatest Redskins in 2002; and
|
21 | | WHEREAS, Following his career as a player in the NFL, |
22 | | Richard Stanfel, Sr. began his coaching career at Notre Dame |

1 | | University and the University of San Francisco before spending |
2 | | the remainder of his 35-year coaching career in the pro ranks |
3 | | with the Philadelphia Eagles, the San Francisco 49ers, the New |
4 | | Orleans Saints, and the Chicago Bears; he became the interim |
5 | | head coach for the New Orleans Saints for the final 4 games of |
6 | | the 1980 season; from 1981 to 1992, he served as the offensive |
7 | | line coach for the Chicago Bears and helped produce a solid |
8 | | offensive line that was an integral part of the Bears winning |
9 | | Super Bowl XX following the 1985 season; and
|
10 | | WHEREAS, Richard Stanfel, Sr. was named a senior nominee |
11 | | for the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1993 and again in 2012 and |
12 | | was respected and loved by his fellow coaches and players |
13 | | alike; and
|
14 | | WHEREAS, Richard Stanfel, Sr. is survived by his sons, |
15 | | Richard (Mary Roxanne) Stanfel, Jr., Scott (Deadra) Stanfel, |
16 | | and Jon (Sandra) Stanfel; his grandchildren, Jordyn, Taylor, |
17 | | Nick, Sam, Peter, Margaret, Brandon, and Jessica; and his |
18 | | sister, Lois Jensen; therefore, be it

19 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL |
20 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with his |
21 | | family and friends, mourn the passing of Richard Anthony "Dick" |
22 | | Stanfel, Sr.; and be it further
