SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Dr. Timothy Brumleve; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Dr. Brumleve was born in Champaign on March 15,
51952 to Mary and Robert Brumleve; he married Dorothy Anderson
6on May 24, 1974 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina; he graduated in
71969 from University Laboratory High School in Urbana; in June
8of 1973, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from the
9University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, graduating with
10high honors and highest departmental distinction in chemistry;
11at the University of Illinois, he was an Edmund J. James
12Scholar, was named to the Bronze Tablet, and received the ACS
13Division of Analytical Chemistry Undergraduate Award; he
14received his Doctor of Philosophy in Analytical Chemistry on
15December 26, 1978 from the University of North Carolina at
16Chapel Hill, where he was the recipient of the first John
17Motley Morehead Foundation fellowship in chemistry; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Dr. Brumleve was an internationally recognized
19authority on lighting technologies; he was a leader in the
20research and development of industrial lighting; his career in
21chemistry began in 1970 at Anderson Physics Laboratories, Inc.
22(APL) in Urbana, a company founded by his father-in-law, Dr.
23Scott Anderson; from 1977 to 1978, he was a research and

1teaching assistant in chemistry at the University of North
2Carolina; he was a post-doctoral research associate from 1978
3to 1979 at Colorado State University, where he conducted
4research in electroanalytical chemistry; from 1979 to 1980, he
5taught undergraduate chemistry courses at the State University
6of New York; he returned to APL in 1980, spending the next 9
7years working as director of research and development; from
81989 to 1994, he was a senior scientist at APL; from 1994 to
92013, he was APL's Vice-President of Technology; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Dr. Brumleve invented multiple materials and
11components for fluorescent and high-intensity discharge lamps,
12resulting in 10 United States patents and pending applications
13as well as multiple derivative foreign patents; he published
14more than 20 papers in professional journals since 1978 and
15authored 29 professional conference papers in chemistry and
16lamp-related areas; he invented new zinc-mercury amalgam
17products for fluorescent lamps, which grew into a $2 million
18product line; he served as a member of the organizing committee
19for the International Symposium on the Science and Technology
20of Lighting; in 2013, he started Tim Brumleve & Co., a
21consulting firm specializing in high-temperature materials
22chemistry, discharge lighting, and electroanalytical
23chemistry; and
 
24    WHEREAS, Dr. Brumleve interests included collecting

1antique radios, televisions, test equipment, and vinyl LPs;
2from an early age, he enjoyed playing the organ, winning a
3statewide organ playing contest; he also had a longtime
4interest in electronics, with his first job as a teenager at
5Radio Doctors in Champaign; he also enjoyed Ham radio and going
6antiquing with his wife, watching classic television shows and
7movies, and watching golf on weekends; he was a member of the
8Antique Radio Club of Illinois and enjoyed riding and repairing
9his classic Triumph motorcycle; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Dr. Brumleve was preceded in death by his wife,
11Dorothy, and his parents; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Dr. Brumleve is survived by his 5 children, Jacob
13Brumleve, Joseph Brumleve, William Brumleve, Catherine Roland,
14and Abraham Brumleve; his 4 grandchildren, Mary Roland, Clark
15Roland, Timothy Brumleve, and Joshua Brumleve; his
16step-granddaughter, Martha Luca; his sister, Sally Popa; and
17numerous extended family members and friends; therefore, be it
 
18    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL
19ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
20Dr. Timothy Brumleve, and extend our sincere condolences to his
21family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
