2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of John Timmes of Peoria, who passed away on | ||||||
4 | July 27, 2015; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, John Timmes was born in Jackson, Mississippi on | ||||||
6 | February 19, 1925 to Ophelia Rembert and Charley Timmes; he
| ||||||
7 | married Kathryn Williams on August 11, 1956 in Ashland, | ||||||
8 | Kentucky; he was educated in the Jackson, Mississippi school | ||||||
9 | system and was a United States Army veteran, serving from 1943 | ||||||
10 | to 1945 during World War II; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, John Timmes began a long career in law enforcement | ||||||
12 | as a patrolman in the Peoria Police
Department in December of | ||||||
13 | 1958; he was promoted to Sergeant in 1966 and worked in the | ||||||
14 | juvenile
and civic affairs division for the next 16 years;
he | ||||||
15 | and his partner and long-time friend, George Shadid, were the | ||||||
16 | first integrated
partners on Peoria's police force; after | ||||||
17 | retiring from the police department, he worked security at | ||||||
18 | Caterpillar, Inc., as head of
security at the Peoria Civic | ||||||
19 | Center, and at Peoria School District 150, where he worked
| ||||||
20 | security at Manual High School and Trewyn Middle School; he | ||||||
21 | provided security for the Carver Community Center and at the | ||||||
22 | Riverplex as a Peoria
Park District police officer, until his | ||||||
23 | final retirement in 2005; he was named Peoria Policeman of the |

1 | Year in 1970 and was inducted into the Peoria
African-American | ||||||
2 | Hall of Fame Museum in 2000; his many other awards include the
| ||||||
3 | Lifetime Service Award from the Peoria Afro-American Police | ||||||
4 | League in 2006; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, John Timmes was an avid tennis player who won many | ||||||
6 | city tournaments with his favorite partner, Dr.
James Stafford; | ||||||
7 | he served on the board of directors of the Carver Community | ||||||
8 | Center and was a member of
the Bradley University Omega Psi Phi | ||||||
9 | Fraternity, the Tri-County Urban League Guild, and Bethel
| ||||||
10 | United Methodist Church; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, John Timmes was preceded in death by his parents; | ||||||
12 | his daughter, Janique Timmes; his brother, Elbert Timmes; his | ||||||
13 | niece, Joan Timmes; and his nephew, Milton Timmes; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, John Timmes is survived by his wife, Kathryn
W. | ||||||
15 | Timmes; his daughters, Johnna N. Timmes and Carolyn Collins; | ||||||
16 | his sisters, Doris (Walter) Nelson and Ida B. Kelly;
his | ||||||
17 | nephews, Charles (Valerie) Timmes and Vanness Nelson; his | ||||||
18 | nieces,
Cynthia Long and Patricia Timmes; his great-niece, | ||||||
19 | Brittany (Steve) Graves;
his great-nephew, Trenton N. Timmes; | ||||||
20 | and a host of other family and friends; therefore, be it
| ||||||
21 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL | ||||||
22 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of |

1 | John Timmes, and extend our sincere condolences to his family, | ||||||
2 | friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further
| ||||||
3 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
4 | presented to the family of John Timmes as an expression of our | ||||||
5 | deepest sympathy.
