2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
3 | | learn of the death of Joseph Mortier of Moline, who passed away |
4 | | on July 25, 2015; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Joseph Mortier was born on March 3, 1925 in |
6 | | Moline; his parents were Oscar and Emily (nee Mestdagt) |
7 | | Mortier; he married Patricia Runge Wilson on April 19, 1947 at |
8 | | Sacred Heart Church in Moline; and
|
9 | | WHEREAS, Joseph Mortier was inducted into the United States |
10 | | Navy in June of 1943; he served on the USS Quincy, where |
11 | | Winston Churchill and Franklin D. Roosevelt met Joseph Stalin |
12 | | for the signing of the Yalta Treaty; his campaigns included the |
13 | | European-African Middle Eastern Campaign, Occupational |
14 | | Services in Japan, where he was docked in Tokyo Bay when the |
15 | | surrender papers were signed, and the Atlantic and Pacific |
16 | | Campaigns; his ship was the first to fire at the beaches at |
17 | | Normandy on D-Day; he was honorably discharged from the service |
18 | | in March of 1946; and
|
19 | | WHEREAS, Joseph Mortier graduated from Moline High School; |
20 | | after his discharge from the military, he attended DeVry |
21 | | Technical School in Chicago; he later attended Moline Community |
22 | | College and graduated from Western Illinois University in |

1 | | Macomb, where he earned his master's + 30 degree; and
|
2 | | WHEREAS, Joseph Mortier was employed as a teacher at John |
3 | | Deere Junior High for 32 years and later worked at Moline High |
4 | | School; he also held a journeyman's card in printing; and |
5 | | WHEREAS, Joseph Mortier was a member of Sacred Heart Church |
6 | | in Moline, the Illinois Retired Teachers Association, the Milan |
7 | | Rifle Club, and the Scott County Sportsman's Gun Club, where he |
8 | | was the State Champion Skeet Shooter in 1983; he was also an |
9 | | instructor for 55 Alive and founded the Moline Archery Club at |
10 | | Moline Community College; and
|
11 | | WHEREAS, Joseph Mortier was preceded in death by his |
12 | | parents; a brother, Walter Mortier; and 3 children, John |
13 | | Michael, Christopher Paul, and Marcia Dawn Mortier; and
|
14 | | WHEREAS, Joseph Mortier is survived by his wife, Pat; 2 |
15 | | children, Mark Joseph Mortier and Melanie Beth (Scott) |
16 | | Verstraete; 7 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren; |
17 | | therefore, be it

18 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL |
19 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with his |
20 | | family and friends, mourn the passing of Joseph Mortier; and be |
21 | | it further
