SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Andrew Vincent Granato of Champaign, who
4passed away on June 3, 2015; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Andrew Granato was born in Cleveland, Ohio to
6Salvatore Granato and Francesca (nee Polizzi) Granato; he
7graduated from Bethlemen Central High School in Delmar, New
8York and served in the United States Naval Reserve while
9attending the University of Rochester; he received his Bachelor
10of Science in 1948 and his Master of Science in 1950 from the
11Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York; he earned
12his Ph.D. in 1955 from Brown University in Providence, Rhode
13Island; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Andrew Granato was a world-renowned physicist at
15the University of Illinois, recruited to be a researcher in the
16field of Condensed Matter Physics; he published more than 170
17peer-reviewed papers and was the primary sponsor of 32 Ph.D.
18students; he focused on several lines of research in structural
19weaknesses and imperfections in materials; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Andrew Granato was a Research Associate at Brown
21University from 1955 to 1957; from 1957 to 1959, he was a
22Research Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois;

1from 1959 to 1961, he was a visiting professor in Aachen,
2Germany, holding a Guggenheim Fellowship for the first year; he
3was appointed associate professor for physics in 1961 and
4professor of physics in 1964; from 1971 to 1972, he was an
5associate in the Center for Advanced Study at the University of
6Illinois; and
 
7    WHEREAS, In 1976, Andrew Granato received a United States
8Scientist Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation for
9Research at the Technical University in Aachen; he was a member
10of the Executive Committee of the Division of Condensed Matter
11Physics of the American Physical Society, a Fellow of the
12American Physical Society and the Acoustical Society of
13America, and a member of the American Institute of
14Metallurgical Engineers and the Institute of Electrical and
15Electronics Engineers; he was Chairman of the International
16Conference on Internal Friction and Ultrasonic Attenuation
17held in Urbana in 1985; from 1987 to 1988, he was the Bernd T.
18Matthias Visiting Scholar at the Los Alamos National Laboratory
19and Guest Research Fellow at the Institute for Industrial
20Science at the University of Tokyo; he also received several
21fellowships and awards, including the Zener Prize and
22Guggenheim and Humboldt fellowships; and
 
23    WHEREAS, Andrew Granato was preceded in death by his
24parents, and his wife, Pauline Brassard Granato; and

1    WHEREAS, Andrew Granato is survived by his 4 children,
2Samuel Charles Granato (Susy), Andrea Marguerite Frankenfield
3(David), Sarah Francesca Yeates, and Ann Vivian Welch (Rick);
4his 3 grandchildren, Andrew Granato, Willis Welch, and
5Alexander Granato; and his sister, Vivian Granato; therefore,
6be it
 
7    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL
8ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
9Andrew Vincent Granato, and extend our sincere condolences to
10his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
11further
 
12    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
13presented to the family of Andrew Granato as an expression of
14our deepest sympathy.
