|
2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
3 | | learn of the death of Paul J. Dunn, M.D. of Oak Park, who |
4 | | passed away on March 24, 2015; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Dunn was born in Newport, Kentucky on October |
6 | | 27, 1919 to Florence (nee Brill) and William C. Dunn; he |
7 | | received his high school diploma from Covington (Ky.) Latin |
8 | | School at the age of 15 and then took college classes provided |
9 | | for Latin School graduates; he joined the United States Navy in |
10 | | 1942; he was transferred to the Marines and served in the 28th |
11 | | Infantry Regiment of the Fifth Marine Division in the months |
12 | | prior to the invasion of Iwo Jima; following the war, he |
13 | | studied at Xavier University in Cincinnati before being |
14 | | admitted to Loyola University Medical School in Chicago, |
15 | | graduating in 1951; he did post-graduate studies at Harvard |
16 | | Medical School and then returned to Xavier to complete his |
17 | | undergraduate degree in 1955; he married Kathryn in 1951; and
|
18 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Dunn was a retired pediatrician, a pioneer of |
19 | | Montessori education in the United States, and an early and |
20 | | leading national advocate of preventive and holistic |
21 | | approaches to medical care; he and his wife founded the Alcuin |
22 | | Montessori School in Oak Park in 1961, which has been operating |
23 | | continuously for 54 years; he served on the board of trustees |

1 | | of the American Montessori Society from 1962 to 1965, as |
2 | | President of Alcuin's board of directors, and was a co-founder |
3 | | with his wife of the Illinois Montessori Society; in 1967, due |
4 | | to his interest in treating brain-injured children, he |
5 | | co-founded the Chicago Center for the Achievement of Human |
6 | | Potential and served as its medical director; he also founded |
7 | | the Center for Integrative Treatment and Biochemical Nutrition |
8 | | in Oak Park; he served as President of the International
|
9 | | Academy of Preventive Medicine from 1979 to 1980, as a member |
10 | | of the Illinois
Commission on Children from 1977 to 1981, as |
11 | | Assistant Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at the Stritch |
12 | | School of Medicine at Loyola University, and on the
staffs of |
13 | | St. Anne, Oak Park, Loretto, and West Suburban hospitals; and
|
14 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Dunn was
preceded in death by his parents; his |
15 | | 3 brothers, Edward, Jack, and Bill Dunn;
and his sister, Mary |
16 | | Zaffiro; and
|
17 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Dunn is survived by his wife, Kathryn; his |
18 | | children, Chris (Beth) Dunn, Brian
(Deb) Dunn, Paul Dunn, Jr., |
19 | | Peter Dunn, Michael Dunn, Mark (Ann) Dunn, John
(Alexa) Dunn, |
20 | | Sarah Dunn, Jeff Dunn, and Julie Dunn; his 9 grandchildren,
|
21 | | Zeke Dunn, Molly Dunn, Kelly Barnd, Jacob Barnd, Jack Dunn, |
22 | | Patrick Dunn,
Katie Dunn, Ian Dunn, and Raleigh Dunn; and other |
23 | | relatives and many friends; therefore, be it

1 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL |
2 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of |
3 | | Paul J. Dunn, M.D., and extend our sincere condolences to his |
4 | | family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it |
5 | | further

6 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
7 | | presented to the family of Dr. Dunn as an expression of our |
8 | | deepest sympathy.
