SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is a public
3service organization founded on January 13, 1913 by 22 young
4women with a vision on the campus of the prestigious Howard
5University in Washington, D.C.; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Only weeks after its founding, Delta Sigma Theta
7Sorority, Inc.'s first public act of service was participation
8in the women's suffrage movement demanding rights for women,
9particularly the right to vote; and
 
10    WHEREAS, More than 250,000 women have joined this
11illustrious organization, with 1,000 collegiate and alumnae
12chapters located in the United States and around the world,
13including chapters in England, Japan (Tokyo and Okinawa),
14Germany, the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, the Bahamas, Jamaica, and
15the Republic of Korea; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., is composed of
17college-educated women committed to a lifetime of implementing
18the sorority's mission through its 5-point program thrust of
19educational development, economic development, political
20awareness and involvement, physical and mental health, and
21international awareness and involvement; and

1    WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is celebrating
2102 years of exemplary service and dedication toward impacting
3communities, leading dialogues on national and global public
4policy, supporting quality education and removing barriers,
5stimulating current and future economic growth, and promoting
6quality of life overall; and
 
7    WHEREAS, In 1989, the National Social Action Commission
8instituted Delta Days in the nation's capital, an annual
9legislative conference to increase member involvement in the
10public policy-making process; Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
11became a Non-Governmental Organization at the United Nations in
122003; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Legislative briefings, issue forums, and advocacy
14skills development and meeting with key policy makers, members
15of the United States Congress staff members, and experts are
16all part of the sorority's established platform; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Delta Days at the Illinois State Capitol occur on
18an annual basis, with members from across the entire State of
19Illinois, and, in 2015, will embrace the theme of "Advocacy in
20Action - A Stronger Voice - A Stronger Presence"; therefore, be

22    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL

1ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we commend the efforts
2of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., for its continued
3commitment to public service, recognize its collective
4contributions in helping to make the State of Illinois a better
5place to live, work, and play, and designate April 29, 2015 as
6Delta Day at the Illinois State Capitol; and be it further
 
7    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
8presented to Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. as a symbol of
9our respect and esteem.
