2 | WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is a public | ||||||
3 | service organization founded on January 13, 1913 by 22 young | ||||||
4 | women with a vision on the campus of the prestigious Howard | ||||||
5 | University in Washington, D.C.; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Only weeks after its founding, Delta Sigma Theta | ||||||
7 | Sorority, Inc.'s first public act of service was participation | ||||||
8 | in the women's suffrage movement demanding rights for women, | ||||||
9 | particularly the right to vote; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, More than 250,000 women have joined this | ||||||
11 | illustrious organization, with 1,000 collegiate and alumnae | ||||||
12 | chapters located in the United States and around the world, | ||||||
13 | including chapters in England, Japan (Tokyo and Okinawa), | ||||||
14 | Germany, the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, the Bahamas, Jamaica, and | ||||||
15 | the Republic of Korea; and
| ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., is composed of | ||||||
17 | college-educated women committed to a lifetime of implementing | ||||||
18 | the sorority's mission through its 5-point program thrust of | ||||||
19 | educational development, economic development, political | ||||||
20 | awareness and involvement, physical and mental health, and | ||||||
21 | international awareness and involvement; and

1 | WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is celebrating | ||||||
2 | 102 years of exemplary service and dedication toward impacting | ||||||
3 | communities, leading dialogues on national and global public | ||||||
4 | policy, supporting quality education and removing barriers, | ||||||
5 | stimulating current and future economic growth, and promoting | ||||||
6 | quality of life overall; and | ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, In 1989, the National Social Action Commission | ||||||
8 | instituted Delta Days in the nation's capital, an annual | ||||||
9 | legislative conference to increase member involvement in the | ||||||
10 | public policy-making process; Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. | ||||||
11 | became a Non-Governmental Organization at the United Nations in | ||||||
12 | 2003; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Legislative briefings, issue forums, and advocacy | ||||||
14 | skills development and meeting with key policy makers, members | ||||||
15 | of the United States Congress staff members, and experts are | ||||||
16 | all part of the sorority's established platform; and
| ||||||
17 | WHEREAS, Delta Days at the Illinois State Capitol occur on | ||||||
18 | an annual basis, with members from across the entire State of | ||||||
19 | Illinois, and, in 2015, will embrace the theme of "Advocacy in | ||||||
20 | Action - A Stronger Voice - A Stronger Presence"; therefore, be | ||||||
21 | it

22 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL |

1 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we commend the efforts | ||||||
2 | of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., for its continued | ||||||
3 | commitment to public service, recognize its collective | ||||||
4 | contributions in helping to make the State of Illinois a better | ||||||
5 | place to live, work, and play, and designate April 29, 2015 as | ||||||
6 | Delta Day at the Illinois State Capitol; and be it further
| ||||||
7 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
8 | presented to Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. as a symbol of | ||||||
9 | our respect and esteem.
