|
2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
3 | | learn of the death of Anne McDonald Oakley of Quincy, who |
4 | | passed away on January 30, 2015; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Anne Oakley was born in Raleigh, North Carolina on |
6 | | February 7, 1932 to Ralph and Mabel Peele McDonald; she |
7 | | graduated from Needham Broughton High School in 1950 and from |
8 | | Duke University in 1954, where she attended as an Angier B. |
9 | | Duke Scholar, a competitive, fully-paid, 4-year scholarship; |
10 | | she received one of Duke's highest honors as a member of the |
11 | | Order of the White Duchy and was recognized for her leadership |
12 | | and academic achievement with inclusion in Phi Kappa Delta, an |
13 | | honorary fraternity; she was also a member of the Pi Beta Phi |
14 | | sorority and was active in alumni activities throughout her |
15 | | life; she married Thomas A. Oakley on December 22, 1954 in |
16 | | Raleigh; and
|
17 | | WHEREAS, Anne Oakley was stationed with her husband at |
18 | | several United States Air Force bases around the country; they |
19 | | returned to Quincy in August of 1957, and Anne provided her |
20 | | intellect and unwavering support to her husband as they worked |
21 | | to build Quincy Newspapers, Inc.; and
|
22 | | WHEREAS, Anne Oakley was active in a number of community |

1 | | boards, serving as President of the Quincy Service League, the |
2 | | Anna Brown Home Women's Board, and the Friends of the Library; |
3 | | she served on boards associated with Cheerful Home and the |
4 | | United Way; she was a past President of the Illinois Women's |
5 | | Golf Association, a statewide golf organization with which she |
6 | | was associated for 30 years; she served on the Vestry of her |
7 | | church, St. John's Parish (the former St. John's Episcopal |
8 | | Church); she was a member of Quincy Country Club, the Island |
9 | | Club in Marco Island, Florida, and she and her husband were |
10 | | founding members of Naples National Golf Club in Florida; she |
11 | | was a past member of Friends in Council; and |
12 | | WHEREAS, Anne Oakley enjoyed golf, playing bridge with the |
13 | | ladies of Murphy's Tables, and spending time with family and |
14 | | friends; and

15 | | WHEREAS, Anne Oakley was preceded in death by her parents; |
16 | | her son, Tom; her brother, Charles Chalmers McDonald; her |
17 | | niece, Nancy Geoghegan Farish; her son-in-law, Stephen Young |
18 | | Winters; and her brother-in-law, Peter A. "Tony" Oakley; and
|
19 | | WHEREAS, Anne Oakley is survived by her husband, Tom; her |
20 | | son, Ralph McDonald Oakley, and his wife, Lisa, and their |
21 | | children, Allison Oakley Hall (Dustin) and Sullivan Smith |
22 | | Oakley; her daughter, Mary Oakley Winters, and her children, |
23 | | Thomas Lyle Van Ness (Lesley), Benjamin Beeson Van Ness |

15 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL |
16 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of |
17 | | Anne McDonald Oakley, and extend our sincere condolences to her |
18 | | family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it |
19 | | further
|
20 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
21 | | presented to the family of Anne Oakley as an expression of our |
22 | | deepest sympathy.
