2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
3 | | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Samuel |
4 | | Frye Burrell, who passed away on September 28, 2016; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Samuel Burrell was born in Panola, Alabama to |
6 | | Willie and Eva Mae Burrell on September 18, 1938; he graduated |
7 | | from North Sumter High School in 1957 and joined the United |
8 | | States Army; he completed Army Warfare training at Fort |
9 | | Benning, Georgia and Army Medical School at Brooke Army Medical |
10 | | Center at Fort Sam Houston, Texas; he served as an Army |
11 | | paramedic; and
|
12 | | WHEREAS, Samuel Burrell left the Army in 1960 and relocated |
13 | | to Chicago, where he worked as a Chicago Transit Authority bus |
14 | | operator; and
|
15 | | WHEREAS, Samuel Burrell attended DeVry University from |
16 | | 1967 to 1969 to study electrical engineering; he left and went |
17 | | to work for North American Phillips as an Electronic |
18 | | Technician; in 1974, he took a position with the General Motors |
19 | | Electromotive Division and resumed his studies at DeVry |
20 | | University from 1975 to 1977; he was certified as a Master |
21 | | Mechanic, Electrician, and Locomotive Engineer; and |

1 | | WHEREAS, Samuel Burrell left General Motors in 1984, and |
2 | | joined Mayor Harold Washington's reform administration; he |
3 | | continued his education at Roosevelt University from 1987 to |
4 | | 1988, majoring in finance; he left the City of Chicago in 2002 |
5 | | and established Fuller-Burrell Electric, an electrical |
6 | | contracting company; and |
7 | | WHEREAS, Samuel Burrell was a member of the Pan African |
8 | | Students Organization, the Black Panther Party, the NAACP, and |
9 | | the independent political movement on the west side of Chicago; |
10 | | he was elected to the Chicago City Council in 1990, where he |
11 | | served as Alderman of the 29th ward until 1999; he founded the |
12 | | United Voter Registration League which registered more than |
13 | | 50,000 voters for the 1992 presidential election; he was proud |
14 | | to be called a "freedom fighter" by the president of the local |
15 | | chapter of the NAACP; and |
16 | | WHEREAS, Samuel Burrell was preceded in death by his |
17 | | parents; his brothers, James and Jesse Burrell; and his |
18 | | children, Ruwa, Linda, and Mark Burrell; and
|
19 | | WHEREAS, Samuel Burrell is survived by his wife of 50 |
20 | | years, Rosie L. (Key); his daughters, Cheronne Michelle Mayes, |
21 | | Joye Burrell(John) Beamon, and Miesha Samantha (Gary) Turner; |
22 | | his sons, William F. Little Esq., Edward E. Burrell, and Sam |
23 | | (Erica) Burrell II; his brothers, Willie (Dorothy), Bill |

1 | | (Ellen), Charles (Barbara), and Lawrence; his sisters, Mattie |
2 | | and Gail (Timothy); many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, |
3 | | nieces, nephews, and other relatives; and a host of friends; |
4 | | therefore, be it

5 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
6 | | NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we |
7 | | mourn the passing of Samuel Burrell, and extend our sincere |
8 | | condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved |
9 | | him; and be it further

10 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
11 | | presented to the family of Samuel Burrell as an expression of |
12 | | our deepest sympathy.
