|
2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
3 | | Representatives wish to recognize Tourette Syndrome Awareness |
4 | | Month, being held from May 15 through June 15, 2016; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Tourette Syndrome is a neurological disorder |
6 | | characterized by repetitive,
stereotyped, involuntary |
7 | | movements, and vocalizations called tics; and
|
8 | | WHEREAS, Early symptoms of Tourette Syndrome are typically |
9 | | noticed first in childhood, with
the average onset between the |
10 | | ages of three and nine years of age; and
|
11 | | WHEREAS, Tourette Syndrome occurs in people from all ethnic |
12 | | groups; males are
affected about three to four times more often |
13 | | than females; and |
14 | | WHEREAS, It is estimated that 200,000 Americans have the |
15 | | most severe form of Tourette
Syndrome, and as many as one in |
16 | | 100 exhibit milder and less complex symptoms such as chronic
|
17 | | motor or vocal tics; and |
18 | | WHEREAS, Some of the symptoms of Tourette Syndrome include |
19 | | simple motor tics that are
sudden, brief, repetitive movements |
20 | | that involve a limited number of muscle groups, including
eye |

1 | | blinking and other eye movements, facial grimacing, shoulder |
2 | | shrugging, head or
shoulder jerking, and simple vocalizations |
3 | | might include repetitive throat-clearing, sniffing, or
|
4 | | grunting sounds; and |
5 | | WHEREAS, Some of the more complex symptoms include |
6 | | distinct, coordinated patterns of
movements involving several |
7 | | muscle groups, complex motor tics that might include facial
|
8 | | grimacing combined with a head twist and a shoulder shrug, and |
9 | | other complex motor tics may
actually appear purposeful, |
10 | | including sniffing or touching objects, hopping, jumping, |
11 | | bending, or
twisting; and
|
12 | | WHEREAS, According to the Tourette Association of America, |
13 | | May 15 through June 15 is
Tourette Syndrome Awareness Month in |
14 | | the United States in an effort to help raise awareness of
this |
15 | | condition and aid in the pursuit of research into this |
16 | | syndrome; and
|
17 | | WHEREAS, There are five ways to participate in Tourette |
18 | | Syndrome Awareness Month,
including: |
19 | | 1) Joining a social media campaign to raise awareness of |
20 | | Tourette Syndrome; |
21 | | 2) Participating in "Teal Tuesdays" by wearing teal; |
22 | | 3) Reaching out to local chapters or support groups to get |

1 | | involved; |
2 | | 4) Reaching out to local legislators advocating for |
3 | | Tourette Syndrome Awareness;
and |
4 | | 5) By participating in a Team Tourette Awareness Walk; |
5 | | therefore, be it
|
6 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
7 | | NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we |
8 | | recognize Tourette Syndrome Awareness Month, being held from |
9 | | May 15 through June 15, 2016 and declare May 31, 2016 as |
10 | | Tourette Syndrome Awareness Day in the State of Illinois; and |
11 | | be it further

12 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
13 | | presented to the Tourette Syndrome Association of Illinois as a |
14 | | symbol our our respect and esteem.
