2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives wish to congratulate The Salvation
Army on 150 | ||||||
4 | years of doing "The Most Good"; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, The Salvation Army has a long history of doing | ||||||
6 | "The Most Good" by providing,
among other services, food, | ||||||
7 | shelter, clothing, education, employment, educational | ||||||
8 | opportunities,
family counseling, toys for children, and | ||||||
9 | relief during disasters and emergencies; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, The Salvation Army was founded in 1865 by William | ||||||
11 | and Catherine Booth as a Christian Mission in
London, England | ||||||
12 | to "preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the poor, homeless, | ||||||
13 | hungry, and
destitute"; and | ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, The Salvation Army opened its first location in | ||||||
15 | the United States in Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania; and | ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, The Salvation Army first organized in Chicago in | ||||||
17 | 1882, and opened its first "Slum
Post" in 1892 to nurse the | ||||||
18 | sick, clean rooms, wash and mend clothes, care for the | ||||||
19 | children, and
perform other practical tasks; and | ||||||
20 | WHEREAS, During World War I, The Salvation Army served |

| |||||||
1 | freshly-cooked donuts to troops on the
front lines; and | ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, During the Great Depression, The Salvation Army | ||||||
3 | opened its facilities to provide
food, shelter, and employment; | ||||||
4 | and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, During World War II, The Salvation Army was | ||||||
6 | instrumental in forming USO clubs for
troops at home and | ||||||
7 | overseas; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, In 1965, The Salvation Army began providing family | ||||||
9 | counseling to those in need; and | ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, The Salvation Army Metropolitan Division | ||||||
11 | supported the response to the
September 11, 2001 attacks with | ||||||
12 | expertise, volunteers, and materials; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, The Salvation Army currently consists of 40 | ||||||
14 | divisions with 1,252 corps, staffed by
3,600 officers, 63,000 | ||||||
15 | employees, 107,000 soldiers, 404,000 adherents, and 3.4 | ||||||
16 | million
volunteers world-wide; therefore, be it
| ||||||
17 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
18 | NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
19 | congratulate The Salvation Army on 150 years of doing "The Most | ||||||
20 | Good"; and be it further

2 | presented to the Illinois, U.S., and
international | ||||||
3 | headquarters of The Salvation Army as a token of our gratitude | ||||||
4 | and respect for the
work that they do.
