| 1 | HOUSE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, The City of Olney and Richland County are | ||||||
| 3 | celebrating the Dodransbicentennial, the 175th anniversary, of | ||||||
| 4 | their founding, from July 22, 2016 to July 24, 2016; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Richland County was formed in 1841 by combining | ||||||
| 6 | approximately 350 square miles of land from Clay and Lawrence | ||||||
| 7 | Counties; and
| ||||||
| 8 | WHEREAS, "Olney", so named by Judge Aaron Shaw after his | ||||||
| 9 | dear friend, Nathan Olney, was chosen as the county seat due to | ||||||
| 10 | its central location; and
| ||||||
| 11 | WHEREAS, Olney and Richland County have a rich history of | ||||||
| 12 | employment opportunities and serve as transportation, medical, | ||||||
| 13 | cultural, and agricultural centers for southeastern Illinois; | ||||||
| 14 | and
| ||||||
| 15 | WHEREAS, For over 50 years, students have received quality, | ||||||
| 16 | affordable secondary education at Olney Central College, | ||||||
| 17 | located in Olney and Richland County; and
| ||||||
| 18 | WHEREAS, Olney is widely known as the "Home of the White | ||||||
| 19 | Squirrels", a safe haven for a large colony of albino squirrels | ||||||
| 20 | that first appeared in the early 1900s; the squirrels remain an | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | attraction for curious visitors from all over the world; and
| ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, Olney proudly hosts the Cummins Municipal Band, | ||||||
| 3 | the oldest continuously operating municipal band in Illinois | ||||||
| 4 | and a fixture since 1807; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Many hundreds of Olney and Richland County | ||||||
| 6 | residents, from the Civil War to the present, have faithfully | ||||||
| 7 | served our country in defense of freedom and democracy in the | ||||||
| 8 | U.S. Armed Forces; and | ||||||
| 9 | WHEREAS, As home to many churches, fraternal and service | ||||||
| 10 | organizations, and volunteer groups, Olney and Richland County | ||||||
| 11 | citizens are generous in their donations to fellow citizens and | ||||||
| 12 | many worthy causes in the community and beyond; and
| ||||||
| 13 | WHEREAS, The City of Olney and Richland County are home to | ||||||
| 14 | viable, prosperous, and proud rural communities whose citizens | ||||||
| 15 | respect their history with vision for the future; therefore, be | ||||||
| 16 | it

| 17 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
| 18 | NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
| 19 | congratulate the citizens of the City of Olney and Richland | ||||||
| 20 | County on the occasion of their 175th anniversary and wish them | ||||||
| 21 | continued success and happiness in the future; and be it | ||||||
