2 | WHEREAS, Following the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl | ||||||
3 | Harbor, brothers Robert, Richard, and
Ronald Jung of Freeburg | ||||||
4 | enlisted in the United States Armed Forces to serve in
World | ||||||
5 | War II; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Ronald Jung served as an aerial gunner on a B-24 | ||||||
7 | bomber; Richard Jung served as a
Navy sailor and crewed an | ||||||
8 | amphibious landing craft stationed in New Guinea; Robert Jung
| ||||||
9 | served in the Navy as a PT-boat gunner in France; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Following World War II, the brothers returned to | ||||||
11 | Freeburg to start their families, and all three Jung brothers | ||||||
12 | have grown old together, with Robert, 94 on June 6, 2016, | ||||||
13 | Richard, 91 on May 7, 2016, and Ronald, 90 on April 25, 2016; | ||||||
14 | and | ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, The Jung brothers remain deeply mindful of their | ||||||
16 | wartime memories and the pride
they feel at taking part in | ||||||
17 | something historic and epic; and
| ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, As of 2016, it is estimated that fewer than | ||||||
19 | 750,000 World War II veterans are still
alive, and that number | ||||||
20 | decreases with the passing of nearly 500 every day; and

1 | WHEREAS, According to the National World War II Museum in | ||||||
2 | New Orleans, Louisiana, it is estimated that by 2036, there
| ||||||
3 | will be no surviving veterans of World War II to recount their | ||||||
4 | experiences; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, The Jung brothers hope that the United States | ||||||
6 | continues to learn from the lessons of
World War II, with | ||||||
7 | Richard Jung noting, "People don't talk about war anymore" and | ||||||
8 | that there should be a "hell of a good reason for us to go back | ||||||
9 | to war"; therefore, be it
| ||||||
10 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
11 | NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
12 | offer Robert, Richard, and Ronald Jung
our heartfelt thanks for | ||||||
13 | their service to our country and dedication to their community | ||||||
14 | and
family; and be it further | ||||||
15 | RESOLVED, That we honor all World War II veterans and
| ||||||
16 | members of the Greatest Generation, whose sacrifices helped | ||||||
17 | shape our nation; and be it further
| ||||||
18 | RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be | ||||||
19 | presented to Robert, Richard, and Ronald
Jung as an expression | ||||||
20 | of our esteem and respect.
