HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Following the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl
3Harbor, brothers Robert, Richard, and Ronald Jung of Freeburg
4enlisted in the United States Armed Forces to serve in World
5War II; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Ronald Jung served as an aerial gunner on a B-24
7bomber; Richard Jung served as a Navy sailor and crewed an
8amphibious landing craft stationed in New Guinea; Robert Jung
9served in the Navy as a PT-boat gunner in France; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Following World War II, the brothers returned to
11Freeburg to start their families, and all three Jung brothers
12have grown old together, with Robert, 94 on June 6, 2016,
13Richard, 91 on May 7, 2016, and Ronald, 90 on April 25, 2016;
14and
 
15    WHEREAS, The Jung brothers remain deeply mindful of their
16wartime memories and the pride they feel at taking part in
17something historic and epic; and
 
18    WHEREAS, As of 2016, it is estimated that fewer than
19750,000 World War II veterans are still alive, and that number
20decreases with the passing of nearly 500 every day; and

1    WHEREAS, According to the National World War II Museum in
2New Orleans, Louisiana, it is estimated that by 2036, there
3will be no surviving veterans of World War II to recount their
4experiences; and
 
5    WHEREAS, The Jung brothers hope that the United States
6continues to learn from the lessons of World War II, with
7Richard Jung noting, "People don't talk about war anymore" and
8that there should be a "hell of a good reason for us to go back
9to war"; therefore, be it
 
10    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
11NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
12offer Robert, Richard, and Ronald Jung our heartfelt thanks for
13their service to our country and dedication to their community
14and family; and be it further
 
15    RESOLVED, That we honor all World War II veterans and
16members of the Greatest Generation, whose sacrifices helped
17shape our nation; and be it further
 
18    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
19presented to Robert, Richard, and Ronald Jung as an expression
20of our esteem and respect.
