2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives wish to congratulate the members of the Kiwanis | ||||||
4 | Club of Aurora on the occasion of the organization's 100th | ||||||
5 | anniversary on September 20, 2016; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Kiwanis International is a volunteer-led | ||||||
7 | organization based in 7 regions: Africa, Asia-Pacific, Canada | ||||||
8 | and Caribbean, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, and the | ||||||
9 | United States and Pacific Canada; there are nearly 600,000 | ||||||
10 | members in Kiwanis and the organization annually raises more | ||||||
11 | than $100 million, sponsors nearly 150,000 service projects, | ||||||
12 | and reports over 18 million volunteer hours to strengthen | ||||||
13 | communities and serve children; Kiwanis also sponsors about | ||||||
14 | 7,000 youth service clubs with nearly 320,000 youth members; | ||||||
15 | and
| ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, The Kiwanis Club of Aurora is involved in many | ||||||
17 | civic initiatives in the local community, including $40,000 in | ||||||
18 | annual funding to school and other youth programs; $100,000 in | ||||||
19 | funding to the Aurora Public Library to build the Kiwanis | ||||||
20 | Children's Center; 4 scholarships through the Community | ||||||
21 | Foundation of the Fox River Valley which give $1,250 per year | ||||||
22 | for 2 years to students; 3 area fundraisers, consisting of a | ||||||
23 | pancake fundraiser, place mat advertisements for various |

1 | events, and selling peanuts for charity; and 2 annual grants to | ||||||
2 | a variety of organizations that help children; and
| ||||||
3 | WHEREAS, The Kiwanis Club of Aurora is also a co-sponsor of | ||||||
4 | the "Coats for Kids" - Aurora program in partnership with the | ||||||
5 | City of Aurora, Communities In Schools, and various Aurora | ||||||
6 | schools to distribute free coats to needy children; in 2015, | ||||||
7 | approximately 1,800 new coats were ordered at wholesale prices | ||||||
8 | and over 2,000 surplus coats were distributed to Aurora | ||||||
9 | schools; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Women constitute about 26% of total members in | ||||||
11 | Kiwanis International; at the 2013 International Convention, | ||||||
12 | Sue Petrisin was elected to serve as the organization's first | ||||||
13 | female international vice president; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, The members of the Kiwanis Club of Aurora serve as | ||||||
15 | models of hard work, integrity, and dedication for the people | ||||||
16 | of the State of Illinois; therefore, be it

17 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
18 | NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
19 | congratulate the members of the Kiwanis Club of Aurora on the | ||||||
20 | occasion of the organization's 100th anniversary and wish them | ||||||
21 | continued success and happiness in the future; and be it | ||||||
22 | further
