2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
3 | | Representatives are saddened to learn of the passing of Joyce |
4 | | Marie Haywood Ewell, who passed away on April 4, 2016; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Joyce Ewell was born on September 29, 1932; her |
6 | | parents were Anthony Rudolph Haywood and Inez Baker Haywood; |
7 | | she married Raymond Whitney Ewell on September 14, 1953; and
|
8 | | WHEREAS, Joyce Ewell was raised in Chicago, attended McCosh |
9 | | Elementary School, and graduated from Englewood High School in |
10 | | 1950; she continued to pursue her education and received a |
11 | | bachelor's degree in education from Chicago Teachers College in |
12 | | 1960 and a master's degree from DePaul University in 1969; and
|
13 | | WHEREAS, Joyce Ewell was a member of St. Edmunds Episcopal |
14 | | Church; she later became a devoted member and lay minister of |
15 | | Messiah-St. Bartholomew Episcopal Church, where she served as |
16 | | the first female Senior Warden; and
|
17 | | WHEREAS, Joyce Ewell started her teaching career at the |
18 | | Chicago Public Schools; she later worked with the City Colleges |
19 | | of Chicago, where she advanced to the position of |
20 | | Vice-President of Olive Harvey College, and continued to teach |
21 | | at Malcolm X College until she retired in 2000; and

1 | | WHEREAS, Joyce Ewell was a faithful member of Alpha Kappa |
2 | | Alpha Sorority Inc., Theta Omega Chapter; she also was a member |
3 | | of the Woodlawn Organization and the Women of S.I.C.K.; and
|
4 | | WHEREAS, Joyce Ewell loved to travel, hang out with her |
5 | | friends in Acapulco, Mexico and Union Pier, Michigan, and visit |
6 | | her family in Denver, Colorado; and |
7 | | WHEREAS, Joyce Ewell was preceded in death by her parents |
8 | | and her younger sister, Jean Haywood Byrd; and
|
9 | | WHEREAS, Joyce Ewell is survived by her sons, Raymond, Marc |
10 | | Whitney, and Raymond Anthony "Tony"; her grandsons, Kendal, |
11 | | Cameron, Kareim, Marc Jr., and Ray; her great-grandson, Silas; |
12 | | her niece, Lynette Byrd Norman; her step-sister, Carolyn |
13 | | Haywood Lee; and her many other relatives and friends; |
14 | | therefore, be it

15 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
16 | | NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that |
17 | | we, along with all who knew and loved her, mourn the passing of |
18 | | Joyce Marie Haywood Ewell and extend our sincere condolences to |
19 | | her family and friends; and be it further

20 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
