2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
3 | | Representatives wish to congratulate the City of Elmhurst on |
4 | | being designated as one of the "Top 100 Safest Cities" in the |
5 | | United States; and
|
6 | | WHEREAS, Elmhurst, ranked 87th on the list, has a crime |
7 | | rate that is lower than the national average; from 2014 to 2015 |
8 | | it saw significant decreases in residential burglaries, motor |
9 | | vehicle burglary and thefts, criminal damage to property, and |
10 | | DUIs; and
|
11 | | WHEREAS, The Elmhurst Police Department values community |
12 | | engagement and participates in many different programs
to |
13 | | ensure that the residents are involved in the community and |
14 | | protected; some of the ways in which it engages the community |
15 | | is with Neighborhood Roll Calls - an award-winning program that |
16 | | creates a partnerships between the
police and the community and |
17 | | facilitates communication between residents and the officers

18 | | patrolling their streets, allowing residents and officers to |
19 | | learn about each other; 33
Neighborhood Roll Calls were held in |
20 | | 2015, at which 608 residents attended; and
|
21 | | WHEREAS, Police Officers conduct foot patrols in |
22 | | residential neighborhoods and provide
various types of |

1 | | materials and informational pamphlets to residents; police |
2 | | officers speak to community organizations, such as the park
|
3 | | district, high schools, and churches to inform the public on |
4 | | related issues, trends, and events; officers ride bike patrols |
5 | | in areas with high pedestrian and bicycle traffic; drop boxes |
6 | | are provided in the department's lobby for residents to
easily |
7 | | and safely dispose of prescription drugs; and
|
8 | | WHEREAS, The Elmhurst Police Department hosts the |
9 | | Citizen's Police Academy - one of the most popular and |
10 | | successful programs within Elmhurst; this 12-week program |
11 | | provides citizens with an opportunity to see how the department |
12 | | serves the community; the Department also facilitates |
13 | | D.A.R.E., which is taught in 12 Elmhurst grade schools, |
14 | | challenging students to make
good choices using the D.A.R.E. |
15 | | decision-making model and covers wide range of topics; and
|
16 | | WHEREAS, Elmhurst is home to nearly 45,000 people, and |
17 | | offers a mix of location, transportation, and |
18 | | business-friendly
tools that make it one of DuPage County's |
19 | | most attractive locales; it has a vibrant downtown and a unique |
20 | | business
district; it boasts a regional hospital, |
21 | | state-of-the-art library, liberal arts college, museums, |
22 | | top-rated
schools, and parks; therefore, be it
