2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
3 | | Representatives wish to congratulate the members of the |
4 | | Nineteenth Century Charitable Association on the occasion of |
5 | | the organization's 125th anniversary on March 16, 2016; and
|
6 | | WHEREAS, The Nineteenth Century Club was established in |
7 | | 1891 by a group of visionary women who believed that education, |
8 | | charitable activities, and civic involvement were vital |
9 | | elements in a thriving community; the spirit of the founders |
10 | | continues today in the work of the Nineteenth Century |
11 | | Charitable Association through benevolence grants, |
12 | | scholarships, and public programming in five areas - music, |
13 | | art, literature, science, and social sciences; and
|
14 | | WHEREAS, Since 1891, the Nineteenth Century Charitable |
15 | | Association has focused on strengthening the community through |
16 | | learning; the organization's diverse membership builds |
17 | | mutually beneficial partnerships, practices and promotes |
18 | | charitable giving, and advances intellectual stimulation, |
19 | | learning, volunteerism, and fellowship; and
|
20 | | WHEREAS, Over the years, the Nineteenth Century Charitable |
21 | | Association has provided support as well as thousands of |
22 | | donations to community organizations and not-for-profits |

1 | | through direct community outreach grant funding and the reduced |
2 | | or free use of its landmark building; the organization has also |
3 | | funded over 1,000 four-year college scholarships to area |
4 | | students, sewn and knitted more than 56,000 garments for |
5 | | infants, children, soldiers, and those in need from natural |
6 | | disasters, offered over 6,700 enriching and educational |
7 | | programs in art, music, social science, science, and |
8 | | literature, and has been a trusted community anchor that has |
9 | | touched countless lives in the past 125 years; and
|
10 | | WHEREAS, The Nineteenth Century Charitable Association is |
11 | | the sole owner of the organization's building at 178 Forest |
12 | | Avenue in Oak Park, which is used to support and enable the |
13 | | group's charitable and educational endeavors; various |
14 | | charitable and cultural activities are supported by its over |
15 | | 200 members, volunteers, and donors, as well as events held in |
16 | | this Oak Park Landmark; therefore, be it

17 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
18 | | NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we |
19 | | congratulate the members of the Nineteenth Century Charitable |
20 | | Association on the occasion of the organization's 125th |
21 | | anniversary and wish them continued success and happiness in |
22 | | the future; and be it further
