2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
3 | | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Rev. |
4 | | George Marshall, Jr.; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Rev. Marshall was born in Vicksburg, Mississippi |
6 | | to George, Sr. and Elizabeth "Barbara" Marshall on June 1, |
7 | | 1936; and
|
8 | | WHEREAS, Rev. Marshall relocated to Illinois in 1956 and |
9 | | joined Gayles
Memorial Baptist Church; in 1958, he was |
10 | | appointed as a Deacon; from 1963 to 1968, he served as Gayles |
11 | | Memorial Baptist Church went through transitions from the May
|
12 | | Street location to the YMCA location, and finally to its |
13 | | current location on Gillette Avenue; during that time, he was |
14 | | appointed as the
Sunday School Superintendent, serving for 18 |
15 | | years; and
|
16 | | WHEREAS, Rev. Marshall continued his education by |
17 | | attending a 2-year study program at Waubonsee
Community |
18 | | College; from 1972
to 1989, he was a student of biblical |
19 | | studies at the Chicago Baptist Institute, the Moody Bible
|
20 | | Institute, and the Church and Family Institute in Bethany, |
21 | | Oklahoma; and |
|

1 | | WHEREAS, Rev. Marshall confessed his calling to the |
2 | | ministry
on December 19, 1975; he gave his first sermon on |
3 | | January 3, 1976 and was ordained as a
Minister on June 1, 1976; |
4 | | he was elected to be the Pastor of Gayles Memorial Baptist
|
5 | | Church in June of 1981; under his leadership, the congregation |
6 | | grew and a new sanctuary was dedicated on May 20, 1984; and |
7 | | WHEREAS, Rev. Marshall dedicated many years to Gayles |
8 | | Memorial Baptist Church and the Aurora
Community; he served as |
9 | | a Chaplain for the State of Illinois Department of
Corrections |
10 | | and on the Board of Directors for "One Church for One Child" |
11 | | and "Habitat for Humanity"; he served as President for |
12 | | Minister's Alliance for 2 years and on the Board of Directors |
13 | | for
the "Hessed House" for 3 years; under his guidance and |
14 | | leadership, many
ministries and auxiliaries have been |
15 | | established; he worked with the Board of Trustees, the Youth |
16 | | Choir, the Children's Church, the Hospitality Committee,
|
17 | | Nurse's Aide, the Male Chorus, the Women's Choir, the |
18 | | Performing Arts Ministry, and the Media
Ministry; and
|
19 | | WHEREAS, Rev. Marshall was preceded in death by his |
20 | | parents; his sister, Elizabeth (Samuel, deceased) McGhee; his 3
|
21 | | brothers, Eddie (Theresa) Marshall, Roscoe (Rosie) Marshall, |
22 | | and Wesley (Albirda) Marshall; Lawson (Beatrice) Smith; his |
23 | | father-in-law and mother-in-law, Jasper and Marcella
Price; |
24 | | and his son, Scottie Marshall; and

1 | | WHEREAS, Rev. Marshall is survived by his wife of 54 years,
|
2 | | Barbara; his 2 sons, James Marshall and Marc Marshall; his 6 |
3 | | daughters,
Betty (King), Mildred (Alfred Turner), Sharon |
4 | | (Clark), Vanessa
(Treves Williams), Julita (Jeff McGowan), and |
5 | | Phyllis (Eugene Brown); a host of grandchildren, |
6 | | great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews,
and cousins; his special |
7 | | friend and mentor, Rev. Truman B. Hazelwood; his special |
8 | | friends, Deacon
Arthur Harden and Min. Lillie Harden; and |
9 | | numerous church members and friends; therefore, be it
|
10 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
11 | | NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we |
12 | | mourn the passing of Rev. George Marshall, Jr., and extend our |
13 | | sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew |
14 | | and loved him; and be it further
|
15 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
16 | | presented to the family of Rev. Marshall as an expression of |
17 | | our deepest sympathy.
