HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail,
3extending from Wood River, Illinois to the mouth of the
4Columbia River in Oregon and Washington, was established by the
5United States Congress in 1978; and
 
6    WHEREAS, The Consolidated Natural Resources Act of 2008
7directed the National Park Service to conduct a Special
8Resources Study to assess the suitability and feasibility of
9extending the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail by
10including the Eastern Legacy sites, the historic routes and
11sites in the East that were vital to the preparation and
12planning of the Lewis and Clark "Corps of Discovery"
13expedition; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Extending the Lewis and Clark National Historic
15Trail eastward fulfills the objectives of the National Trails
16System, established in 1968 to provide for the ever-increasing
17outdoor recreation needs of an expanding population and to
18promote the preservation of, public access to, travel within,
19and enjoyment and appreciation of open-air, outdoor areas, and
20historic resources of the nation; and
 
21    WHEREAS, William Clark, co-commander of the "Corps of
22Discovery" expedition, along with 10 other members of the

1expedition, were Kentuckians who were involved in every pivotal
2event during the "Corps of Discovery" expedition; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Meriwether Lewis, William Clark, other members of
4the expedition, and tribal people under their care traveled
5through Kentucky after exploring the West; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Kentucky newspapers were the first newspapers in
7the country to publish reports of the success of the "Corps of
8Discovery" expedition as well as the first reports of the death
9of Governor Meriwether Lewis; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Tourism is a major component of Kentucky's economy
11and the addition of 52 counties in Kentucky to the Lewis and
12Clark National Historic Trail would greatly benefit the tourism
13industry and the overall economy of the Commonwealth;
14therefore, be it
 
15    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
16NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
17urge the National Park Service to include the Eastern Legacy
18Sites, which include 52 Kentucky counties, in the Lewis and
19Clark National Historic Trail; and be it further
 
20    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
21presented to National Park Service Director, Jon Jarvis.
