|
2 | | WHEREAS, On January 13, 1913, 22 young collegiate women at |
3 | | the campus of Howard University founded Delta Sigma Theta |
4 | | Sorority, Incorporated with a vision to improve their community |
5 | | through the committed constructive development of its members |
6 | | and to public service with a primary focus on the black |
7 | | community; and
|
8 | | WHEREAS, The sorority has observed their 100th anniversary |
9 | | in January of 2013 and has grown to become the largest |
10 | | African-American female organization in the world, with more |
11 | | than 200,000 college-educated women; and
|
12 | | WHEREAS, On January 10, 1976, the Springfield-Decatur Area |
13 | | Alumnae Chapter was chartered by 18 women who wanted to carry |
14 | | out the vision of the 22 founders; and
|
15 | | WHEREAS, The Springfield-Decatur Area Alumnae Chapter |
16 | | carries out the Sorority's Five Programmatic Thrusts of |
17 | | Economic Development: Educational Development, International |
18 | | Involvement and Awareness, Physical and Mental Health, and |
19 | | Political Awareness and Involvement in their programmatic |
20 | | efforts which serve the Springfield and Decatur communities; |
21 | | and

1 | | WHEREAS, For the past 40 years, the Springfield-Decatur |
2 | | Area Alumnae Chapter has given unwavering service to the |
3 | | community by implementing programs such as La Petite Delta, the |
4 | | Dr. Betty Shabazz Academy, EMBODI, the Dr. Jeanne Noble GEMS, |
5 | | and programs to improve the physical and mental health of the |
6 | | community by offering workshops on financial fortitude, |
7 | | domestic violence, cancer awareness, and diabetes awareness; |
8 | | and |
9 | | WHEREAS, The Springfield-Decatur Area Alumnae Chapter has |
10 | | performed many public service activities in the Springfield and |
11 | | Decatur communities for the past 40 years by volunteering at |
12 | | various social service organizations, raising funds to assist |
13 | | with important activities, and working with children and senior |
14 | | citizens; and
|
15 | | WHEREAS, The Springfield-Decatur Area Alumnae Chapter |
16 | | continues to encourages citizens to be active participants in |
17 | | the political process by holding voter registration drives, |
18 | | hosting candidate forums to educate citizens on those seeking |
19 | | office, and raising awareness of social issues which may affect |
20 | | the community; and

21 | | WHEREAS, The Springfield-Decatur Area Alumnae Chapter |
22 | | continues to grow in the Springfield and Decatur communities |
23 | | through 40 years of uncompromising commitment to our |

1 | | communities through service, leadership, and empowerment; |
2 | | therefore, be it

3 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
4 | | NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we |
5 | | congratulate the members of the Springfield-Decatur Area |
6 | | Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated for |
7 | | their 40 years of uncompromising commitment to our communities |
8 | | through their service, leadership, and empowerment of those |
9 | | they serve; and be it further

10 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
11 | | presented to the Springfield-Decatur Area Alumnae Chapter of |
12 | | Delta Sigma Theta Sorority as an expression of our esteem and |
13 | | respect.
