2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Hearl | ||||||
4 | Bishop of Canton; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Hearl Bishop was born in Karnak, a small town in | ||||||
6 | Southern Illinois, on December 24, 1920; he attended Southern | ||||||
7 | Illinois University, where he received his Bachelor of Arts and | ||||||
8 | master's degree in education; he married Helen Ilene Dickey in | ||||||
9 | 1946; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Hearl Bishop was the agriculture teacher at | ||||||
11 | Eldorado High School from 1946 to 1961; he was then hired as | ||||||
12 | the Assistant Principal at Ridgeway High School for 2 years; he | ||||||
13 | moved his family north and continued his work in education | ||||||
14 | administration as principal of Mahomet-Seymour High School | ||||||
15 | from 1963 to 1966; while working in the school district, he | ||||||
16 | worked on his doctorate in business administration at the | ||||||
17 | University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; and
| ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, In 1966, Hearl Bishop's career brought him to | ||||||
19 | Canton, Illinois, as he was hired as the Dean of Canton | ||||||
20 | Community College (CCC); he, along with Dr. William Taylor and | ||||||
21 | Harold Swartzbaugh and the many supporters who worked | ||||||
22 | tirelessly for 2 years, successfully passed a referendum to |

1 | elevate CCC to Class I Junior College status in 1968; the | ||||||
2 | college would become known as Spoon River College; | ||||||
3 | groundbreaking began in 1972 for the new campus on the | ||||||
4 | outskirts of Canton, and he was named the first President | ||||||
5 | Emeritus, continuing his work until his retirement in 1978; and | ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Hearl Bishop's dedication to higher education | ||||||
7 | helped inspire the college to continue to grow with the | ||||||
8 | addition of 3 satellite campuses in Macomb, Rushville, and | ||||||
9 | Havana after his retirement; and | ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Hearl Bishop enjoyed his days golfing with friends | ||||||
11 | and challenging rounds with his sons; they enjoyed fishing | ||||||
12 | locally and trips out west, which proved to be adventurous; he | ||||||
13 | also enjoyed playing billiards at the Canton Senior Center; and | ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Hearl Bishop lived his life to the fullest; he was | ||||||
15 | a pillar in the Canton community and a source of love and | ||||||
16 | strength to his family and an advocate for the education and | ||||||
17 | advancement of agriculture in Illinois; and

18 | WHEREAS, Hearl Bishop was preceded in death by his wife, | ||||||
19 | Helen; his mother, Minnie; his father, Luther; and his sister, | ||||||
20 | Margaree (Bishop) Hunter; and
| ||||||
21 | WHEREAS, Hearl Bishop is survived by his sons, Dan Bishop |

1 | (Connie Huttes Bishop) and Jack Bishop (Karla Hatcher Bishop); | ||||||
2 | his daughter, Beth Chapman (Philip Chapman); his | ||||||
3 | grandchildren, Amy Deakin, Emily Deakin Harmony (Faron | ||||||
4 | Harmony), Jennifer Bishop (Justin Hood), Katie Bishop, Matt | ||||||
5 | Chapman (Amy J. Chapman), and Nikki Chapman; his | ||||||
6 | great-grandchildren, Ashlyn Deakin, Dustin, Jadlyn, Victoria, | ||||||
7 | and Faron Harmony, Parker and Maggie Chapman, and Hunter Hood; | ||||||
8 | his 2 brothers, Bill and Bruce Bishop; and his sister, Louise | ||||||
9 | (Bishop) Eastwood; therefore, be it
| ||||||
10 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
11 | NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
12 | mourn the passing of Hearl Bishop, and extend our sincere | ||||||
13 | condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved | ||||||
14 | him; and be it further

15 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
16 | presented to the family of Hearl Bishop as an expression of our | ||||||
17 | deepest sympathy.
