2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives wish to congratulate Juan Salgado on the | ||||||
4 | occasion of being named as a MacArthur Fellow; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, The MacArthur Fellows Program awards unrestricted | ||||||
6 | fellowships to talented individuals who have shown | ||||||
7 | extraordinary originality and dedication in their creative | ||||||
8 | pursuits and a marked capacity for self-direction; Fellows are | ||||||
9 | selected based on their exceptional creativity, promise for | ||||||
10 | important future advances based on a track record of | ||||||
11 | significant accomplishment, and potential for the fellowship | ||||||
12 | to facilitate subsequent creative work; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Juan Salgado earned his bachelor's degree in | ||||||
14 | economics from Illinois Wesleyan University and his master's | ||||||
15 | degree in urban planning from the University of Illinois at | ||||||
16 | Urbana-Champaign; and
| ||||||
17 | WHEREAS, Juan Salgado has served as President and CEO of | ||||||
18 | the Instituto del Progreso Latino since 2001; during his | ||||||
19 | tenure, he has led the organization through a period of | ||||||
20 | national award winning recognition and historic organizational | ||||||
21 | growth spurred by a focus on creating partnerships, enhancing | ||||||
22 | core competencies, leading innovation, providing quality |

1 | services, and participating in targeted advocacy; and
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, Under Juan Salgado's direction, the Instituto del | ||||||
3 | Progreso Latino has established national best-practice | ||||||
4 | educational and workforce models and was selected as the | ||||||
5 | National Council of La Raza's Affiliate of the Year in 2009; | ||||||
6 | the Instituto also founded the Instituto Health Sciences Career | ||||||
7 | Academy, a new charter high school aimed at inspiring and | ||||||
8 | preparing Chicago's youth for success in the growing healthcare | ||||||
9 | fields; and | ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Juan Salgado was a 2005 Fellow in the Leadership | ||||||
11 | Greater Chicago program for emerging leaders of business, | ||||||
12 | government, and non-profit corporations and a 2007 Fellow for | ||||||
13 | the Aspen Institute Ideas Festival; he served as an advisor to | ||||||
14 | the President of Mexico through the Institute for Mexicans | ||||||
15 | Abroad for 3 years; he is also a member of the Chicago | ||||||
16 | Manufacturing Renaissance Council Executive Board, the | ||||||
17 | Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights and | ||||||
18 | Leadership Greater Chicago Board of Directors, and the Adler | ||||||
19 | School of Professional Psychology Board of Trustees; and
| ||||||
20 | WHEREAS, Juan Salgado was the recipient of the Mexican | ||||||
21 | American Legal Defense and Education Fund's Excellence in | ||||||
22 | Community Service Award in 2010; and |

1 | WHEREAS, Juan Salgado serves as a model of hard work, | ||||||
2 | integrity, and dedication for the people of the State of | ||||||
3 | Illinois; therefore, be it
| ||||||
4 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
5 | NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
6 | congratulate Juan Salgado on the occasion of being named as a | ||||||
7 | MacArthur Fellow and wish him continued success and happiness | ||||||
8 | in the future; and be it further

9 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
10 | presented to Juan Salgado as a symbol of our esteem and | ||||||
11 | respect.
