2 | WHEREAS, The London Towne Houses Cooperative recently | ||||||
3 | renamed Community Building #2 at 901 East 100th Place as the | ||||||
4 | "Ida Curtis Fisher Community Building"; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Ida Fisher passed away on February 11, 2013; and | ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Ida Fisher was an African-American woman, born in | ||||||
7 | Cincinnati, Ohio in 1931; she grew up in a time when society | ||||||
8 | repressed both women and African-Americans; she strongly | ||||||
9 | valued education and work, becoming the first woman to pass the | ||||||
10 | Cincinnati police officer exam; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Ida Fisher worked as a secretary for the | ||||||
12 | Foundation for Cooperative Housing; she eventually began | ||||||
13 | managing the Kansas City, Missouri location and, due to her | ||||||
14 | accomplishments there, was soon asked to travel the country to | ||||||
15 | duplicate her success; she created thousands of cooperative | ||||||
16 | housing units, eventually landing in Chicago, where she broke | ||||||
17 | ground for the 800-unit London Towne Houses Cooperative; and
| ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, Ida Fisher worked as a Vice-President of the First | ||||||
19 | Pennsylvania Bank, where she opened and managed its subsidiary | ||||||
20 | in Chicago, Midwest Mortgage Company, and became the bank's top | ||||||
21 | money maker in the country; she was inspired to open her own |

1 | company, ICF Development; she was also the director of the | ||||||
2 | National Cooperative Bank, the Independence Bank of Chicago, | ||||||
3 | Indecorp (Independence and the Drexel National Bank), the | ||||||
4 | National Association of Housing Cooperatives, the Midwest | ||||||
5 | Association of Housing Cooperatives, Chicago's Museum of | ||||||
6 | Contemporary Art, and the Joseph Holmes Dance Group; and
| ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, Ida Fisher was the recipient of the Chicago Rising | ||||||
8 | Women in Business award, the Most Success Business Women in | ||||||
9 | Chicago
award, and the coveted Jerry Voorhis Award from the | ||||||
10 | National Association of Housing Cooperatives; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Ida Fisher was the wife of Herbert Fisher and the | ||||||
12 | mother of 2 daughters; therefore, be it
| ||||||
13 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
14 | NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
15 | recognize the extraordinary life of Ida Curtis Fisher and | ||||||
16 | support the London Towne Houses Cooperative's decision to name | ||||||
17 | a building in her honor; and be it further

18 | RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be | ||||||
19 | presented to the London Towne Houses Cooperative and the family | ||||||
20 | of Ida Fisher.
