2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
3 | | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Helen |
4 | | Burns Jackson, who passed away on September 7, 2015; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Helen Jackson was born on November 9, 1923 in |
6 | | Greenville County, South Carolina; and
|
7 | | WHEREAS, Helen Jackson received her early education in the |
8 | | public schools of Greenville and, because of her extraordinary |
9 | | singing voice, earned a music scholarship to attend Talladega |
10 | | College in Alabama; and
|
11 | | WHEREAS, Helen Jackson earned her license in cosmetology |
12 | | and owned and operated the Helen B. Jackson Beauty Salon for |
13 | | many years; and
|
14 | | WHEREAS, Helen Jackson was baptized at an early age at |
15 | | Springfield Baptist Church in Greenville, South Carolina; she |
16 | | later joined the Long Branch Baptist Church, and then the |
17 | | Piedmont Manor Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir, |
18 | | delighting parishioners with her soprano voice, served on the |
19 | | Missionary Society, and participated in a host of other church |
20 | | ministries; and |

1 | | WHEREAS, Helen Jackson was a feminist who challenged molds |
2 | | long before the feminist movement became popular; she took an |
3 | | interest in many hobbies, including interior decorating, |
4 | | cosmetology, spending time with her family, and especially |
5 | | serving her community through numerous organizations, |
6 | | including the Boards of Directors of the Phyllis Wheatley |
7 | | Center, the Y.W.C.A., Greenville Technical College, the Trip |
8 | | Advisory Committee, and the Greenville Family Advocate; she was |
9 | | also a member of the Democratic Women's Organization, a |
10 | | founding member of the first Greenville Cosmetology Club, and a |
11 | | member of the 9th District of the South Carolina State |
12 | | Cosmetology Association; and
|
13 | | WHEREAS, Helen Jackson was preceded in death by her loving |
14 | | husband of 40 years, Charles Henry Jackson, Sr.; and
|
15 | | WHEREAS, Helen Jackson is survived by her sons, Rev. Jesse |
16 | | L. Jackson, Sr. and his wife, Jacqueline, and Charles Henry |
17 | | Jackson, Jr., and his wife, Cheryl; her grandchildren, Santita, |
18 | | Jesse, Jr. (Sandra), Jonathan (Marilyn), Felicia, Reginald |
19 | | (mother, Evelyn), Yusef (Amaya), Jacqueline, II, Corey |
20 | | (Shanine), Candace, Crystal, Najma, (Chris and Evelyn Hurst), |
21 | | and Ashley; her great-grandchildren, Jocelyn, Jonathan, |
22 | | Jessica, Leah, Noah, Skye, Cali, Jesse, III, Christian, Akemi, |
23 | | Yusef, Cassius, Corey, Chaileal, Evelyn, Atticus, Matthias, |
24 | | Blythe Eden, and Roman; her cousins, Phillip Jossey, Lisa Junco |

6 | | we, along with her family and friends, mourn the passing of |
7 | | Helen Burns Jackson; and be it further

8 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
9 | | presented to the family of Helen Jackson as an expression of |
10 | | our sympathy.
