| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, The national and Illinois chapters of the League | ||||||
3 | of Women Voters were formed 95 years ago after women received | ||||||
4 | the right to vote; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, The League of Women Voters is a grass roots | ||||||
6 | organization dedicated to registering voters, informing the | ||||||
7 | voting public, and fostering the civic and political life of | ||||||
8 | the communities it serves; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, The League of Women Voters has a history of | ||||||
10 | advocating for positive change, basing its positions on a | ||||||
11 | foundation of research and fact; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, Modeled after the example of the national and | ||||||
13 | State chapters, the League of Women Voters of McLean County was | ||||||
14 | formed in 1933 by Florence Fifer Bohrer; the organization has | ||||||
15 | since led studies on such important civic matters as mental | ||||||
16 | health, water resources, affordable housing, property tax | ||||||
17 | caps, a graduated income tax, changes to procedure for | ||||||
18 | establishing legislative districts, and the ward system in | ||||||
19 | Bloomington; and
| ||||||
20 | WHEREAS, The McLean County League will launch new studies | ||||||
21 | on affordable housing, effective and efficient government, and |
| |||||||
| |||||||
1 | recreational opportunities for youth in 2015 and 2016; and
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, The McLean County League continues to engage in | ||||||
3 | the civic education of young voters and the mentoring of | ||||||
4 | students through its classroom visits and Juliana Sullivan | ||||||
5 | Memorial Scholarship; and | ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, The McLean County League continues to serve as | ||||||
7 | poll watchers, observers of local government entities, and | ||||||
8 | voter registrars; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, The McLean County League each year sponsors | ||||||
10 | several community programs on topics of vital concern to the | ||||||
11 | community, such as school funding and the justice system; the | ||||||
12 | League also sponsors candidate forums as a way of educating the | ||||||
13 | voting public on the positions of candidates for local, State, | ||||||
14 | and national office; and
| ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, The McLean County League has cooperated with | ||||||
16 | partner organizations, such as the Chamber of Commerce, to | ||||||
17 | encourage citizens to run for office; and | ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, The McLean County League is the third largest in | ||||||
19 | the State of Illinois; and
| ||||||
20 | WHEREAS, The McLean County League was recently recognized |
| |||||||
| |||||||
1 | with an award from the American Civil Liberties Union; the | ||||||
2 | League also recently received a Community Impact Award for its | ||||||
3 | study on mental health; and
| ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, The McLean County League experienced a 50% growth | ||||||
5 | in its membership over the past year; therefore, be it
| ||||||
6 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
7 | NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
8 | commend the national and Illinois chapters of the League of | ||||||
9 | Women Voters on its 95 years of service to the voters of the | ||||||
10 | nation and State and congratulate the McLean County League of | ||||||
11 | Women Voters for its past achievements and ongoing work to | ||||||
12 | educate and advocate; and be it further
| ||||||
13 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
14 | presented to the McLean County League of Women Voters as a | ||||||
15 | symbol of our respect and esteem.
