2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
3 | | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Beatrice |
4 | | Holley Sumlin, who passed away on May 18, 2015; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Beatrice Sumlin was born in Birmingham, Alabama on |
6 | | December 30, 1939 to Buford and Jessie Holley; she attended |
7 | | Lincoln Elementary and Parker High School and graduated from |
8 | | Wendel Phillips High School; she later attended the City |
9 | | Colleges of Chicago; she married Thomas Sumlin and they settled |
10 | | in Chicago; and
|
11 | | WHEREAS, Beatrice Sumlin was a vested member in her |
12 | | community; in 1968, she began to volunteer at the 8th Ward |
13 | | Regular
Democratic Organization under the then-Committeeman |
14 | | John H. Stroger, Jr.; from there her career in
politics began; |
15 | | she first became Cook County Sheriff, and after serving in that |
16 | | position for several years
she went on to become a clerk for |
17 | | the Markham courthouse; she left the courthouse to become an |
18 | | executive in the downtown offices of the Cook County
Department |
19 | | of Highway under the leadership of Cook County Board President |
20 | | John H. Stroger, Jr.; her loyalty and hard work led to her |
21 | | appointment as the prestigious Committee Woman of the
8th Ward |
22 | | Regular Democratic Organization, where she served for over 30 |
23 | | years; and

1 | | WHEREAS, Beatrice Sumlin was an active member at New Hope |
2 | | Missionary Baptist Church for 26 years which led to the
|
3 | | transition into Calvary Baptist Church, where she served from |
4 | | day one when they opened their doors; she was a strong voice in |
5 | | the choir and led many solos; and
|
6 | | WHEREAS, Beatrice Sumlin was preceded in death by her |
7 | | parents, and her son, Gregory Sumlin; and
|
8 | | WHEREAS, Beatrice Sumlin is survived by her 4 children, |
9 | | Stanley Sumlin (Janice), Aliscia Jones (Michael), and Jesse and |
10 | | Darlene Sumlin; her grandchildren, LaNeesha Givens (Kevin), |
11 | | Christa Talbott (Sean), Rashaad and Darrell Riley, Ayana |
12 | | Sumlin,
Brian Barker, and Brandi Nelson; her |
13 | | great-grandchildren, Nehmiah Barker and Nia and Imani Talbott; |
14 | | her sister,
Delores Fields; her very special niece, ZsaZsa |
15 | | Fields; and a parade of extended family and precious
friends; |
16 | | therefore, be it

17 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
18 | | NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we |
19 | | mourn the passing of Beatrice Holley Sumlin, and extend our |
20 | | sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew |
21 | | and loved her; and be it further
