HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Beatrice
4Holley Sumlin, who passed away on May 18, 2015; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Beatrice Sumlin was born in Birmingham, Alabama on
6December 30, 1939 to Buford and Jessie Holley; she attended
7Lincoln Elementary and Parker High School and graduated from
8Wendel Phillips High School; she later attended the City
9Colleges of Chicago; she married Thomas Sumlin and they settled
10in Chicago; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Beatrice Sumlin was a vested member in her
12community; in 1968, she began to volunteer at the 8th Ward
13Regular Democratic Organization under the then-Committeeman
14John H. Stroger, Jr.; from there her career in politics began;
15she first became Cook County Sheriff, and after serving in that
16position for several years she went on to become a clerk for
17the Markham courthouse; she left the courthouse to become an
18executive in the downtown offices of the Cook County Department
19of Highway under the leadership of Cook County Board President
20John H. Stroger, Jr.; her loyalty and hard work led to her
21appointment as the prestigious Committee Woman of the 8th Ward
22Regular Democratic Organization, where she served for over 30
23years; and

1    WHEREAS, Beatrice Sumlin was an active member at New Hope
2Missionary Baptist Church for 26 years which led to the
3transition into Calvary Baptist Church, where she served from
4day one when they opened their doors; she was a strong voice in
5the choir and led many solos; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Beatrice Sumlin was preceded in death by her
7parents, and her son, Gregory Sumlin; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Beatrice Sumlin is survived by her 4 children,
9Stanley Sumlin (Janice), Aliscia Jones (Michael), and Jesse and
10Darlene Sumlin; her grandchildren, LaNeesha Givens (Kevin),
11Christa Talbott (Sean), Rashaad and Darrell Riley, Ayana
12Sumlin, Brian Barker, and Brandi Nelson; her
13great-grandchildren, Nehmiah Barker and Nia and Imani Talbott;
14her sister, Delores Fields; her very special niece, ZsaZsa
15Fields; and a parade of extended family and precious friends;
16therefore, be it
 
17    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
18NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
19mourn the passing of Beatrice Holley Sumlin, and extend our
20sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew
21and loved her; and be it further
