2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Cpl. Sara | ||||||
4 | Medina at the age of 23; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Cpl. Medina was one of 6 Marines killed while on a | ||||||
6 | relief
mission in Nepal the week of May 12, 2015; the | ||||||
7 | helicopter was delivering rice and tarps to areas that were hit | ||||||
8 | the hardest by the recent earthquakes; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, Cpl. Medina was serving as a combat photographer | ||||||
10 | on the relief mission, documenting the work done by the Marines
| ||||||
11 | and the need for assistance in Nepal; before deploying to | ||||||
12 | Nepal, she had photographed Marines in South Korea, the | ||||||
13 | Philippines, Japan, Australia, and the United States; she was | ||||||
14 | assigned to Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 469 from | ||||||
15 | Camp Pendleton, California; and
| ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, Cpl. Medina was a 2010 graduate of East Aurora | ||||||
17 | High School, where she was a member of the Navy Junior Reserve | ||||||
18 | Officers Training Corps; during high school, she also did | ||||||
19 | clerical work in a
mechanic shop, but did not hesitate to get | ||||||
20 | in and change oil or fix mufflers; and
| ||||||
21 | WHEREAS, Cpl. Medina returned to her high school to talk to |
| |||||||
| |||||||
1 | current students about the importance of getting a good | ||||||
2 | education and about how, through her military service, she was | ||||||
3 | seeing parts
of the world she had only dreamed about in high | ||||||
4 | school; and | ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Cpl. Medina joined the United States Marines in | ||||||
6 | November of 2010; her decorations include the Navy and Marine | ||||||
7 | Corps Achievement Medal, the Marine Good Conduct Medal, the | ||||||
8 | National Defense Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service | ||||||
9 | Medal, the Korean Defense Service Medal, and a Sea Service | ||||||
10 | Deployment Ribbon; and | ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Cpl. Medina is survived by her parents and | ||||||
12 | siblings, in addition to a fiance and many friends; she is | ||||||
13 | described as a caring, sweet, and loving person who always | ||||||
14 | thought of others; and | ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, Cpl. Medina died fulfilling her dream and serving | ||||||
16 | her country; therefore, be it

17 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
18 | NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
19 | mourn the passing of Cpl. Sara Medina, and extend our sincere | ||||||
20 | condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved | ||||||
21 | her; and be it further
