HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The 2015 St. Louis Cardinals baseball season marks
3the 70th year since Albert "Red" Schoendienst first wore the
4uniform; and
 
5    WHEREAS, For 45 seasons Red Schoendienst wore the uniform
6as a player, coach, and manager; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Red Schoendienst is a 10-time National League All
8Star; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Red Schoendienst was inducted into the National
10Baseball Hall of Fame in 1989; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Red Schoendienst joined the Cardinals in 1945 to
12fill in for left fielder Stan Musial, who was serving in the
13United States Army; he batted .278 with 47 RBI and a National
14League-leading 26 stolen bases; and
 
15    WHEREAS, The following year in 1946, Stan Musial returned
16to the Cardinals and Red Schoendienst moved to third base and
17then shortstop before settling in at second base, leading St.
18Louis to a World Series victory over the Boston Red Sox; and
 
19    WHEREAS, According to the St. Louis Cardinals' career list,

1Red Schoendienst ranks fourth in at-bats (6,841) and pinch hits
2(53); fifth in games (1,795), runs (1,025) and hits (1,980);
3sixth in doubles (352); and seventh in total bases (2,657); he
4led the National League with 200 hits in 1957 and 7 times he
5either led or tied for the league lead in fielding percentage;
6and
 
7    WHEREAS, Red Schoendienst served as a coach on the 1964
8World Championship team; he led St. Louis to a World Series
9victory in 1967 over the Red Sox, and, in 1968, he led the team
10to another N.L. pennant, en route to a 12-year tenure as
11skipper, the longest in franchise history; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Red Schoendienst is still involved with the St.
13Louis Cardinals organization as special assistant to the
14general manager; and
 
15    WHEREAS, On April 13, 2015, Red Schoendienst participated
16in the Cardinals Opening Day festivities where he was honored
17as a player, coach, and manager; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Red Schoendienst was born in Germantown on
19February 2, 1923; and
 
20    WHEREAS, The State of Illinois is proud to call Red
21Schoendienst a native Illinoisan; therefore, be it

1    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
2NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
3recognize Albert "Red" Schoendienst for his outstanding
4achievements and contributions he has made to Major League
5Baseball since 1945; and be it further
 
6    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
7presented to Red Schoendienst and the St. Louis Cardinals'
8organization as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
