2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives wish to recognize the work being done by the | ||||||
4 | Give Something Back Foundation (GSBF) as it holds its annual | ||||||
5 | dinner to welcome new students; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, GSBF was established through the generosity of Bob | ||||||
7 | Carr, a former resident of Lockport, who wanted to give back to | ||||||
8 | the Lockport area community by helping disadvantaged, | ||||||
9 | academically oriented children who were committed to | ||||||
10 | excellence to complete a college degree; Mr. Carr received a | ||||||
11 | merit scholarship at a critical time in his academic career | ||||||
12 | which made it possible for him to finish his college education; | ||||||
13 | realizing how his college education has helped him advance and | ||||||
14 | prosper in today's society, he feels very strongly about giving | ||||||
15 | the same opportunity to other young, striving individuals who | ||||||
16 | do not have the financial resources to attend the university of | ||||||
17 | their choice; he maintains the hope that scholarship recipients | ||||||
18 | will give back to their community in the same manner as they, | ||||||
19 | through the foundation, are giving to others; and
| ||||||
20 | WHEREAS, GSBF started in 2003 when 7 students were given a | ||||||
21 | scholarship to attend college; as of today, 60
new students | ||||||
22 | have joined the 79 already in high school and 51 are currently | ||||||
23 | in college or on the verge of
graduating; in total, GSBF |

| |||||||
1 | currently has 54 college graduates, and, as of April 1, 2015, | ||||||
2 | 244 students are in
the process of preparing for college, are | ||||||
3 | in college, or have graduated; and | ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, Last year marked the first time that GSBF reached | ||||||
5 | out to all of Will County to select students for the
partner | ||||||
6 | school program with Lewis University, University of St. | ||||||
7 | Francis, and Blackburn College; this year
marks another first | ||||||
8 | as GSBF plans to significantly expand its reach to other | ||||||
9 | communities with the help
of like-minded supporters; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, GSBF prepares students for college and for life | ||||||
11 | through activities while in
high school and partnering with | ||||||
12 | universities that are dedicated to serving high-achieving, | ||||||
13 | high-character
students who are fully Pell Grant eligible; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, The Core Activities of GSBF are:
(1) to provide | ||||||
15 | students with financial challenges an opportunity to get an | ||||||
16 | education; (2) to provide students with non-academic | ||||||
17 | activities to prepare them for college and for life; (3) to | ||||||
18 | provide all students a mentor who will assist them as they | ||||||
19 | progress through high school; (4) to provide assistance to | ||||||
20 | students in assessing career and college choices; and (5) to | ||||||
21 | expand the foundation plans by joining forces with other | ||||||
22 | individuals or organizations who want to
assist and provide | ||||||
23 | opportunities for academically oriented students; and

1 | WHEREAS, GSBF's annual dinner will be held on May 5, 2015 | ||||||
2 | at DiNolfo's in Homer Glen; therefore, be it
| ||||||
3 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
4 | NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
5 | recognize the work being done by the Give Something Back | ||||||
6 | Foundation as it holds its annual dinner to welcome new | ||||||
7 | students; and be it further
| ||||||
8 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
9 | presented to the GSBF as an expression of our esteem and | ||||||
10 | respect.
