| 1 | HOUSE RESOLUTION

| 2 | WHEREAS, Someone develops Alzheimer's disease every 67 | ||||||
| 3 | seconds; and | ||||||
| 4 | WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease is on the rise with 5.4 | ||||||
| 5 | million Americans currently living with the disease and an | ||||||
| 6 | estimated 16 million Americans projected to be diagnosed with | ||||||
| 7 | the disease by 2050; and | ||||||
| 8 | WHEREAS, Currently, 210,000 people in Illinois live with | ||||||
| 9 | the disease; there will be 260,000 in 10 years; and
| ||||||
| 10 | WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease is the 6th leading cause of | ||||||
| 11 | death and an unrelenting, progressive condition that destroys | ||||||
| 12 | brain cells, and currently no cure or even a way to slow the | ||||||
| 13 | progression of the disease exists; Alzheimer's places | ||||||
| 14 | significant financial burdens on families and businesses, with | ||||||
| 15 | businesses losing billions a year in lost productivity and | ||||||
| 16 | replacement expenses for employees who miss work or quit to | ||||||
| 17 | care for a relative; and
| ||||||
| 18 | WHEREAS, In Illinois in 2013, there were 587,000 Illinois | ||||||
| 19 | family members and friends who provided over 668 million hours | ||||||
| 20 | of unpaid care, valued at $8.3 billion, to their loved ones | ||||||
| 21 | with Alzheimer's and other dementias; and

| 1 | WHEREAS, The impact of Alzheimer's and other dementias on | ||||||
| 2 | Illinois families, the health care system, and society as a | ||||||
| 3 | whole is of great importance; the need for home and | ||||||
| 4 | community-based services for those with Alzheimer's is on the | ||||||
| 5 | rise and caregiver stress is at an all-time high; and | ||||||
| 6 | WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease is a looming public health | ||||||
| 7 | crisis and we call upon all policymakers to join in the efforts | ||||||
| 8 | to raise awareness and to serve the hundreds of thousands of | ||||||
| 9 | persons with Alzheimer's and other dementias in Illinois, their | ||||||
| 10 | families, and caregivers; and
| ||||||
| 11 | WHEREAS, On March 11, 2015, Alzheimer's advocates will | ||||||
| 12 | speak up for the needs and rights of people with Alzheimer's | ||||||
| 13 | and their families and ask the Illinois legislature to make | ||||||
| 14 | Alzheimer's disease a priority public health issue in the State | ||||||
| 15 | of Illinois; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 16 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
| 17 | NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
| 18 | proclaim March 11, 2015 as the Annual Alzheimer's Association | ||||||
| 19 | Advocacy Day in the State of Illinois.
