2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of James A. McDermott, Sr. "Jim" of Bunker | ||||||
4 | Hill, who passed away on May 16, 2014; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Jim McDermott was born in Portland, Maine on April | ||||||
6 | 21, 1951 to Dr. Leo James McDermott and Jane Bernice (nee | ||||||
7 | Haley); he attended Sacred Heart School and graduated from | ||||||
8 | Cheverus High School and St. Louis University; he married | ||||||
9 | Rosalind Anne Daly on May 11, 1974; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Jim McDermott spent most of his life teaching | ||||||
11 | special needs children and retired as the Special Education | ||||||
12 | Department Head, Work Experience Coordinator, and Emergency | ||||||
13 | Operations Coordinator at Nottingham Community Access Job | ||||||
14 | Training High School in May of 2014; and
| ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, Jim McDermott served in many capacities with the | ||||||
16 | American Heart Association, beginning in St. Louis where he | ||||||
17 | served as a Program Associate for Emergency Cardiac Care and | ||||||
18 | Fitness Programs between 1980 and 1985; he volunteered with | ||||||
19 | local fire departments and emergency agencies as a paramedic, | ||||||
20 | basic life support instructor, EMT instructor, and CERT | ||||||
21 | instructor over the period of more than 30 years; in 1985, his | ||||||
22 | family moved to the Birmingham, Alabama area and he became the |

1 | Affiliate Program and later Management Director for the | ||||||
2 | American Heart Association, Alabama Affiliate; he was very | ||||||
3 | involved in multi-agency programs and was the co-founder of the | ||||||
4 | Coalition for a Tobacco-Free Alabama; and | ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Jim McDermott was a recipient of numerous awards | ||||||
6 | from the State of Alabama for his work with health agencies and | ||||||
7 | efforts to protect children's health; he was also very active | ||||||
8 | with the Knights of Columbus and had served in several | ||||||
9 | leadership positions at the local and state levels; he was | ||||||
10 | recognized by the Alabama State Council as the 1994-1995 Knight | ||||||
11 | of the Year; and | ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, Jim McDermott was an amateur radio enthusiast and | ||||||
13 | member of the Lewis and Clark Radio Club; he was a Skywarn | ||||||
14 | weather spotter and enjoyed his volunteer work in many local | ||||||
15 | community service events; and

16 | WHEREAS, Jim McDermott was preceded in death by his | ||||||
17 | parents; sister-in-law, Sharon (Guimont) McDermott; and | ||||||
18 | brothers-in-law, Walter H. Daly and Robert F. Driscoll, Jr.; | ||||||
19 | and
| ||||||
20 | WHEREAS, Jim McDermott is survived by his wife, Rosalind | ||||||
21 | "Buzzy"; children, Erin and James, Jr. (Seamus); 4 | ||||||
22 | grandchildren, Andrew, Carey, Emily, and Olivia McDermott; |

2 | McDermott, Jr., and Susan E. Mortenson; brothers-in-law, | ||||||

6 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL | ||||||
7 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
8 | James A. McDermott, Sr. "Jim", and extend our sincere | ||||||
9 | condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved | ||||||
10 | him; and be it further

11 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
12 | presented to the family of Jim McDermott as an expression of | ||||||
13 | our deepest sympathy.
