2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Leroy | ||||||
4 | Thomas Harris of Chicago; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Leroy Harris was born in Chicago on July 9, 1945 | ||||||
6 | to Melvina Rita Thompson and Leroy Harris; he graduated from | ||||||
7 | Hyde Park High School (now Hyde Park Academy) in the spring of | ||||||
8 | 1965 and enlisted in the United States Army in August; he was | ||||||
9 | stationed in Vietnam, where he saw combat and served as a | ||||||
10 | military police officer; he earned the National Defense Service | ||||||
11 | Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, | ||||||
12 | and the Good Conduct Medal; while in the service, he also | ||||||
13 | performed as part of a dance troupe to entertain the troops; | ||||||
14 | and
| ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, Leroy Harris worked for the Washington, D.C. | ||||||
16 | Metropolitan Police Department for over 24 years; he started | ||||||
17 | out on foot patrol and retired as a Homicide Detective | ||||||
18 | Sergeant; he also worked as a real estate broker, selling homes | ||||||
19 | to mayors, local politicians, police officers, friends, and | ||||||
20 | family; and

21 | WHEREAS, Leroy Harris relocated to Chicago in 1992 and | ||||||
22 | married his high school sweetheart, Marcia; he retired from the |

| |||||||
1 | Cook County State's Attorney's Office; he also worked as a real | ||||||
2 | estate broker with Coldwell Banker; and
| ||||||
3 | WHEREAS, Leroy Harris was well-known for his barbeque, | ||||||
4 | spaghetti with neck bones, crab cakes, and gumbo and loved to | ||||||
5 | dance; for many years he served as a Trustee at New Christian | ||||||
6 | Valley Full Gospel Baptist Church in South Holland; and
| ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, Leroy Harris is survived by his wife, Marcia; his | ||||||
8 | mother, Melvina Rita Storrs; 3 daughters, Kimberly Fulks | ||||||
9 | (William), Kelli Harris, and Salli Whitfield (Dondre); 2 sons, | ||||||
10 | Kevin Harris and Naland Best (Sharice); one brother, Harold | ||||||
11 | Wymbs (Cassandra); 4 sisters, Lada Harland (Shawn), Shirley | ||||||
12 | James (Clarence), Wylette Collins, and Patricia McAfee; 10 | ||||||
13 | grandchildren, Stacey, Kevin Michael, Kayla, Camille, Alonzo, | ||||||
14 | Kaleb, Parker, Damarion, Dre, and Zaland; 2 aunts, Clara Lee | ||||||
15 | and Ora Belle Wilson; 2 godchildren, Julian and Kelsie Bowers; | ||||||
16 | and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends; | ||||||
17 | therefore, be it

18 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
19 | NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
20 | we mourn the passing of Leroy Thomas Harris, and extend our | ||||||
21 | sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew | ||||||
22 | and loved him; and be it further
