2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives wish to recognize the Village of Fairmont City | ||||||
4 | on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of its founding; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, On February 11, 1914, a petition was filed with | ||||||
6 | St. Clair County to incorporate the Village of Fairmont City, | ||||||
7 | and on March 3, 1914, with a population of over 300, the | ||||||
8 | citizens voted in favor of incorporation; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, Shortly after incorporation, ordinances were | ||||||
10 | passed officially creating the village, establishing the | ||||||
11 | municipal offices, and defining the responsibilities of office | ||||||
12 | holders; the first village elections took place in April of | ||||||
13 | 1914, and the budget for 1915 was established at $5,100; the | ||||||
14 | first mayor of Fairmont City was Philip H. Cohn; and
| ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, In 1936, Fairmont City Hall was built by the Works | ||||||
16 | Progress Administration; the Mexican-American Society of | ||||||
17 | Fairmont City was organized in 1941 for the purpose of | ||||||
18 | providing assistance and social opportunities to the Mexican | ||||||
19 | community; and | ||||||
20 | WHEREAS, The first Bottle Cap Tournament was held in 1972, | ||||||
21 | and in 1989, Rose Lake School was demolished and the Gazebo |

1 | Park was built; the Veterans Memorial was moved from the Granby | ||||||
2 | Diamond to the new park; and | ||||||
3 | WHEREAS, Alex Bregen became Fairmont City's mayor in 1996; | ||||||
4 | and | ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Zinc has long been an important commodity to the | ||||||
6 | people of Fairmont City; the Granby Mining Company from Granby, | ||||||
7 | Missouri built a zinc smelter in the village in 1912; the | ||||||
8 | beginning of World War I, in June of 1914, created a shortage | ||||||
9 | of European zinc and increased the demand for American zinc; | ||||||
10 | the American Zinc Company purchased the Granby Mining Company | ||||||
11 | in 1916; in 1967, the American Zinc Plant closed; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, As of 2010, Fairmont City boasts a population of | ||||||
13 | over 2,600 people and stretches between St. Clair and Madison | ||||||
14 | counties; and
| ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, The citizens of Fairmont City will celebrate its | ||||||
16 | founding on October 18, 2014, beginning with a parade to Granby | ||||||
17 | Park, and ending with the activation of the park's new | ||||||
18 | lighting; therefore, be it

19 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
20 | NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
21 | we recognize the 100th anniversary of the founding of the |

1 | Village of Fairmont City; and be it further
| ||||||
2 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
3 | presented to Fairmont City Mayor Alex Bregen as a symbol of our | ||||||
4 | respect and esteem.
