2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives are pleased to congratulate Elgin High School | ||||||
4 | teacher Deb Perryman on receiving the 2014 Environmental | ||||||
5 | Educator of the Year award from the Environmental Education | ||||||
6 | Association of Illinois; and
| ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, Deb Perryman was recognized for implementing | ||||||
8 | environmental education in and out of the classroom, including | ||||||
9 | using the 35 acres of natural space outside of Elgin High | ||||||
10 | School as an instructional tool; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Deb Perryman and her students spearheaded an | ||||||
12 | advocacy campaign about Miss Martha, the last Passenger Pigeon | ||||||
13 | on Earth, to promote protecting biodiversity; the campaign | ||||||
14 | resulted in Governor Pat Quinn naming September 2014, the | ||||||
15 | "Month of the Passenger Pigeon"; her students are also working | ||||||
16 | on securing a national proclamation about Miss Martha from | ||||||
17 | President Obama; with her help, Elgin High environmental | ||||||
18 | students are organizing a National Biodiversity Teach-In to | ||||||
19 | honor the 100th anniversary of Miss Martha's death; as part of | ||||||
20 | the program, professionals from across the country will present | ||||||
21 | webinars focused on biodiversity topics including protecting | ||||||
22 | Blanding's turtles, the impact of balloons and plastics in the | ||||||
23 | ocean, GMO's effect on biodiversity, monarch butterflies, |

1 | shore birds, native plants, and more; and
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, With the help of the Elgin Sustainability | ||||||
3 | Commission and other local organizations, Deb Perryman and her | ||||||
4 | students also helped inspire the first Elgin Water Day in 2013, | ||||||
5 | with a formal proclamation issued by Elgin Mayor Dave Kaptain; | ||||||
6 | the Elgin Water Day art show and 6K Walk for Water were | ||||||
7 | extremely successful and students are planning the second Elgin | ||||||
8 | Water Day for this October; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, In 2003, Deb Perryman's students helped her author | ||||||
10 | the BP Leader Award which earned a $30,000 grant and an | ||||||
11 | additional $10,000 the following year; the grant paid for | ||||||
12 | various environmental projects including transportation for | ||||||
13 | students to participate in the Mighty Acorns program that | ||||||
14 | provides field trips to nature centers; it also paid for boots, | ||||||
15 | nets, and aquatic chemical test kits for students to monitor | ||||||
16 | the health of Poplar Creek, and pelts, skulls, and track and | ||||||
17 | wildlife cameras for mammal studies; therefore, be it

18 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
19 | NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
20 | we congratulate Elgin High School teacher Deb Perryman on | ||||||
21 | receiving the 2014 Environmental Educator of the Year award; | ||||||
22 | and be it further
