2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Clifton | ||||||
4 | Lyme Skelcher of Marion, who passed away on May 2, 2014; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Clifton Skelcher was born in Cambria on November | ||||||
6 | 26, 1922 to Jack and Vernell (nee Campbell) Skelcher; he | ||||||
7 | married Berdella Simmons on December 29, 1945 in Murphysboro; | ||||||
8 | and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, Clifton Skelcher served in the United States Navy | ||||||
10 | during World War II; he earned 5 bronze stars, his fifth being | ||||||
11 | for the invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944, which became a | ||||||
12 | Silver Battle Star since it was in the first wave landing at | ||||||
13 | Omaha Beach; before Normandy, he participated in every major | ||||||
14 | invasion of Europe - North Africa, Sicily, 2 invasions of | ||||||
15 | Italy, and southern France; later, in the Pacific Theatre of | ||||||
16 | the War, he was in the invasion of the Philippines, liberating | ||||||
17 | the islands from the Japanese occupation, and then he was in | ||||||
18 | the invasion of Okinawa; he next prepared for the invasion of | ||||||
19 | Japan, before the atomic bombs were dropped, ending the war | ||||||
20 | with Japan in August of 1945; and
| ||||||
21 | WHEREAS, Clifton Skelcher retired as the President of | ||||||
22 | Laborer's International Union of North American Local 380 and |

1 | was a member of Lantana Southern Baptist Church of Carbondale | ||||||
2 | and VFW Post 2035 of Brownsville, Texas; and
| ||||||
3 | WHEREAS, Clifton Skelcher was preceded in death by his | ||||||
4 | parents; brother, Cline Skelcher; and sister, Annabelle | ||||||
5 | Morris; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Clifton Skelcher is survived by his wife, Berdella | ||||||
7 | Skelcher; 2 sons, Larry Skelcher and wife, Barbara, and Bradley | ||||||
8 | Skelcher and wife, Dinah Lynn DeMoss; 2 grandsons, Jack | ||||||
9 | Skelcher and wife, Lana, and Jason Skelcher; 4 | ||||||
10 | great-grandchildren, Caleb Skelcher, Colton Skelcher, Casey | ||||||
11 | Skelcher, and Danielle Marie Skelcher; and 3 nephews, Clifton | ||||||
12 | Skelcher and wife, Carol, Michael Skelcher and wife, Sharon, | ||||||
13 | and Jack Morris and wife, Kathy; therefore, be it

14 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
15 | NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
16 | we mourn the passing of Clifton Lyme Skelcher, and extend our | ||||||
17 | sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew | ||||||
18 | and loved him; and be it further

19 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
20 | presented to the family of Clifton Skelcher as an expression of | ||||||
21 | our deepest sympathy.
