2 | WHEREAS, The State of Illinois takes great pride in | ||||||
3 | celebrating the artistic talents and historic accomplishments | ||||||
4 | of its diverse citizenry, representing communities large and | ||||||
5 | small; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
7 | Representatives wish to raise their collective baton in | ||||||
8 | recognition of the 130th anniversary of the Woodstock City | ||||||
9 | Band; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, The Woodstock City Band, funded and supported by | ||||||
11 | the City of Woodstock and the Woodstock Opera House, is widely | ||||||
12 | respected as one of the oldest city bands in the United States; | ||||||
13 | and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, The Woodstock City Band has enjoyed several | ||||||
15 | identities, forming in 1884 under the leadership of Frank W. | ||||||
16 | Medlar as the Woodstock Spring City Band; for many years, the | ||||||
17 | band was known as the Oliver Typewriter Band, featuring | ||||||
18 | employees of the renowned Oliver Typewriter Company; and
| ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, The Woodstock City Band is led by Conductor Duane | ||||||
20 | Peiffer, who has also masterfully taught and directed music | ||||||
21 | students in Woodstock Community Unit School District 200 since |

1 | 1992; and
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, The Woodstock City Band is comprised of a group of | ||||||
3 | outstanding musicians, who perform free weekly summer concerts | ||||||
4 | on the historic Woodstock Square, delighting audiences that | ||||||
5 | often number over 800 local seniors, families, children, and | ||||||
6 | devoted music lovers each week; and
| ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, The Woodstock City Band showcases the exceptional | ||||||
8 | talent of many graduates of local music education programs and | ||||||
9 | their instructors, with performers' ages ranging from high | ||||||
10 | school students to octogenarians and some touting decades of | ||||||
11 | Woodstock City Band membership; and | ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, The repertoire of the Woodstock City Band consists | ||||||
13 | of canonical works, adaptations of popular favorites, and | ||||||
14 | original compositions; the most recent work was commissioned | ||||||
15 | specifically in honor of the band's 130th anniversary; and
| ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, Woodstock City Band performances and their | ||||||
17 | accompanying "ice cream socials" are events that have | ||||||
18 | established a long tradition of old-fashioned, | ||||||
19 | quintessentially Midwestern, summertime community gatherings | ||||||
20 | on the Woodstock Square, bringing families and neighbors | ||||||
21 | together and welcoming and entertaining visitors from | ||||||
22 | throughout McHenry County; therefore, be it

1 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
2 | NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
3 | we congratulate the members of the Woodstock City Band on the | ||||||
4 | occasion of its 130th anniversary and thank them for their | ||||||
5 | dedication to the City of Woodstock and its residents; and be | ||||||
6 | it further

7 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
8 | presented to the Woodstock City Band as a symbol of our esteem | ||||||
9 | and respect.
