2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Earlean | ||||||
4 | Lindsey of Chicago, who passed away on January 8, 2014; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Earlean Lindsey was born on August 4, 1925 in | ||||||
6 | Sawyerville, Alabama to Willie "Bo" and Ethel Taylor; she spent | ||||||
7 | her early years in rural Alabama and moved to Chicago in 1946; | ||||||
8 | she married Bernard Lindsey in 1952; following his passing in | ||||||
9 | 1981, she married Robert Calhoun; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Earlean Lindsey's early jobs were in the domestic | ||||||
11 | and restaurant industry, but in 1959 she moved to the Westside | ||||||
12 | of Chicago and began a career as a community organizer; she was | ||||||
13 | one of the founders of the Westside Association for Community | ||||||
14 | Action, where she was elected President for life; she was a | ||||||
15 | founder and board member emeritus for the Center for New | ||||||
16 | Horizons, an original member of the University of Illinois | ||||||
17 | Urban Health Program Advisory Council, founding member of the | ||||||
18 | University of Illinois Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center's | ||||||
19 | Community Advisory Council, former President of the Heritage | ||||||
20 | Manor, and a founding member of the Chicago Commons | ||||||
21 | Association's Jackie Robinson House; and
| ||||||
22 | WHEREAS, Earlean Lindsey was a strong advocate for |
| |||||||
| |||||||
1 | education; she was active with Malcolm X College in its early | ||||||
2 | years and was a former member of Chicago Public School District | ||||||
3 | 9's local school council; she was a past board member of the | ||||||
4 | Corporate Community Schools of America; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Earlean Lindsey was also passionate about | ||||||
6 | healthcare; she was one of the pioneers in the advent of | ||||||
7 | Community Health Centers and served on a committee for | ||||||
8 | President John F. Kennedy's Commission on Community Mental | ||||||
9 | Health Centers; during the 1960s and 1970s she gave workshops | ||||||
10 | and seminars on community health and organizing across the | ||||||
11 | United States and abroad, and she was one of the first | ||||||
12 | Presidents of the National Association of Community Health | ||||||
13 | Centers; she was an original member of the Mile Square | ||||||
14 | Federation and one of the founders of the Mile Square Health | ||||||
15 | Center; and | ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, Earlean Lindsey received numerous awards and | ||||||
17 | recognitions for her community service and leadership; most | ||||||
18 | notably, she was recognized in the United States House of | ||||||
19 | Representatives for her community service in 1998, and the City | ||||||
20 | of Chicago dedicated the street corner of Damen and Washington | ||||||
21 | as "Mrs. Lindsey Drive" in her honor; and | ||||||
22 | WHEREAS, Earlean Lindsey was a member of Pilgrim Rest | ||||||
23 | Missionary Baptist Church on the Westside of Chicago for 55 |

1 | years; and | ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, Earlean Lindsey was preceded in death by her | ||||||
3 | parents; her step-mother, Vileter Taylor; her children, Earl, | ||||||
4 | Ethel, Donald, and Michael; her grandchild, Cletus; her | ||||||
5 | step-child, Bernard, Jr.; her brothers, Frank, Robert, Jacob, | ||||||
6 | Richard, Curtis, Carlton, R.L., Joseph, and Edward; and her | ||||||
7 | first and second husbands Bernard and Robert; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Earlean Lindsey is survived by her daughters, | ||||||
9 | Janice, Pamela, and Patricia (Leroy); her sons, Leroy, Garnell, | ||||||
10 | and Marvin (Beverly); her Godson, Johnny Brown; her brothers, | ||||||
11 | Willie, Jimmie (Hazel), James, Luke (Mary), and Henry (Mamie); | ||||||
12 | her sisters, Annie Pearl (Joe Lee) and Leslie; her 20 | ||||||
13 | grandchildren; her dozens of great-grandchildren and | ||||||
14 | great-great-grandchildren; and countless nieces, nephews, and | ||||||
15 | friends; therefore, be it
| ||||||
16 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
17 | NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
18 | we mourn the passing of Earlean Lindsey, and extend our sincere | ||||||
19 | condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved | ||||||
20 | her; and be it further
| ||||||
21 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
22 | presented to Earlean Lindsey as an expression of our deepest |
